Building Global Innovator Accelerator (BGI)is a deep innovation global
accelerator based in Lisbon (Portugal) and Cambridge (MA/USA). It stems from a unique
collaboration between ISCTE-University Institute of Lisbon, MIT-Portugal, MIT entities -
Martin Trust Centre for Entrepreneurship, Deshpande Center for Innovation and Caixa
Capital.
BGI focuses in the creation of global value propositions that are leveraged on technology-
based entrepreneurship and marketable innovations. As such, the accelerator selects,
supports and directs start-ups and/or spin-outs with up to 5 years, working on 4 market
verticals:
Medical Technologies & Health IT
Smart Cities & Industrial Tech
Enterprise IT & Smart Data
Ocean Economy
Every year a batch of 20 co’s is selected to join the accelerator and benefit from expert
mentoring amounting to over 1.150h, which includes boot camps in Lisbon (Portugal)
and Cambridge (USA). This free of charge in kind support is valued at 1 million €. But
that’s not all, about 11 out of the 20 accelerated ventures attracts some form of venture
financing (37,1% non-dilutive and 62,9% risk capital sources). And 4 of them are also
supported by Caixa Capital, with up to €500.000 in convertible notes.
Results increasing by the day BGI selected and supported 101 ventures during the last 5
editions, within the pool of submissions spanning from 3 continents and 37 countries. 68
are active & growing worldwide in Brazil, Italy, Russia, Spain, Portugal among other
geographies, having raised over €27 million in funding mainly from Business Angels and
VC’s, resulting in the creation of +200 high tech jobs amounting to +400 jobs.
How does the accelerator work? With part of the Organising team based in Lisbon at
ISCTE-IUL and part in Cambridge (USA) at MIT, the batch starts off late July and graduation
takes place May the following year. Applications typically run from mid-March to late May,
each year.
Unlike any other accelerator in the world, BGI supports its alumni for a period after

players, including advisors, customers, investors, among other.
