16th December, 1773, a group of Massachussets
Colonists raid at midnight at the harbor and dump
342 British tea chests into the sea as a protest of
the tea taxes imposed by the British.
3. Who and Why
The Boston Tea Party was a political and
mercantile protest by the Sons of
Liberty in Boston, Massachussets on
December 16, 1773.The target was the Tea
Act of May 10, 1773, which allowed
the British East India Company to sell tea
from China in American colonies without
paying taxes apart from those imposed by
the Townshend acts American Patriots
strongly opposed the taxes in the
Townshend Act as a violation of their rights.
Demonstrators, some disguised as Native
Americans, destroyed an entire shipment of
tea sent by the East India Company.
4. Why tea was dumped
The Tea was dumped because all of that tea
was worth a lot of money. 340 chests of tea
weighing over 46 tons on board the Beaver,
Dartmouth and Eleanor. The cargo was worth
more than $1,700,000 dollars in today’s
money. This party caused a damage worth
9,659 ₤.
