Recommendations for a safe sleep environment:
1. Place baby on back for every sleep
2. Use a firm sleep surface
3. Keep soft bedding and objects out of the crib
4. With parents’ recommendation, offer a pacifier at nap and bed time (do not force pacifier)
5. Avoid overheating (consider using a wearable blanket)
6. Avoid commercial devices marketed to reduce the risk of SIDS
7. Provide awake, supervised tummy time
What you can teach parents regarding risk reduction and safe sleep (along with the
recommendations listed above):
1. Talk to everyone who cares for your child about safe sleep
2. Room Sharing not Bed Sharing
3. Regular prenatal care
4. Avoid smoking, alcohol, illicit drug use during pregnancy and after birth
5. Breast feeding is recommended
6. Follow your pediatricians recommendations for immunizations
