Sustainable Development In Petroleum Engineering
Sustainability:
In ecology, sustainability (from sustain and ability) is the
property of biological systems to remain and productive
indefinitely. Long-lived and healthy wetlands and forests are
examples of sustainable biological systems. In more general terms,
sustainability is the endurance of systems and processes. The
organizing principle for sustainability is sustainable development,
which includes the four interconnected domains: ecology,
economics, and culture. Sustainability science is the study of
sustainable development and environmental science. Sustainability
is difficult to define and is in basic terms referred to as the process
of maintaining a certain level of productivity in an organization,
community, etc. It is often used interchangeably, especially in the
oil and gas industry, with the term “sustainable development,” with
the latter being the more accepted of the two. The most widely
accepted definition of sustainable development came from the
Brundtland Commission in 1987, which defines sustainable
development as “development that meets the needs of the present
without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their
own needs.” The concept has since expanded and become
increasingly important to the oil and gas industry.
Sustainability vs. sustainable development:
the two terms are used interchangeably, there is still a subtle difference between the two terms. Sustainability
tends to be narrower in its definition and application toward certain aspects and is often used in conjunction
with sustaining renewable resources. “It is an inherent characteristic of healthy social and environmental
systems. It is achieved by maintaining or enhancing various system capacities… so that the system can
withstand external shocks and return to normal functioning.” When defined like this, it leads people to think
that energy fuels are not part of a sustainable future because sustainability would not be characteristic of
nonrenewable resources.
Sustainable development, on the other hand, “involves managing resources in a way that is conducive to
long-term wealth creation and the maintenance of capital.” This means that energy fuels can be included
because they are an important source of wealth and creation and to human well-being. “Sustainable
development is a framework that can deal with open, dynamic, and integrated systems, and one that
acknowledges the interconnectedness of society, the economy, and the environment.” It is a process, rather
than a destination (like the term sustainability implies), and “can be thought of as a frame for interactive
assessment and decision making intended to achieve an evolving set of goals.”

History of sustainable development and sustainability.
Although sustainability seems to be a recent concern, it has been discussed and developed for many years.
There have been many summits, meetings, and conferences that have focused on sustainability and
sustainable development in both the broad sense and one that is more specific to certain industries. (See Fig.)
Sustainable development goals
1. Poverty – End poverty in all its forms everywhere
2. Food – End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture
3. Health – Ensure healthy lives and promote wellbeing for all at all ages
4. Education – Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities
for all
5. Women – Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls
6. Water – Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all
7. Energy – Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all
8. Economy – Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment
and decent work for all
9. Infrastructure – Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster
innovation
10. Inequality – Reduce inequality within and among countries
11. Habitation – Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable

12. Consumption – Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns
13. Climate – Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts
14. Marine-ecosystems – Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable
development
15. Ecosystems – Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage
forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss
16. Institutions – Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to
justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels
Ways the Oil & Gas Industry is Becoming More Sustainable:
1- Reducing Global Gas Flaring
Many oil companies use a common practice known as gas flaring. Gas flaring is the combustion of gases
over relatively short periods to burn off gases released during oil production. The Global Gas Flaring Reduction
public-private partnership (GGFR) launched at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in August
2002. According to The World Bank, the partnership is bringing representatives of governments of oil-
producing countries, state-owned companies, and major international oil companies together so they can
reduce global gas flaring. Together they can overcome common barriers to reduce gas flaring and bring natural
gas to poverty-stricken areas, which is an integral part of the
GGFR program.
2- Companies Going Paperless
Going from paper to electronic systems not only saves trees, it also
helps to eliminate human error and time needed to file papers.
3- Potential of Best Practice to Reduce Impacts from
Oil and Gas Projects in the Amazon
A new best practice framework that combines technical
engineering criteria with ecological and social concerns could
reduce the negative environmental impacts on oil and gas
developments in the Amazon. According to research carried out
on May 2013, the framework could reduce the total number of
drilling platforms and access roads needed for oil and gas projects.
4- Voluntary Sustainability Reporting
Voluntary sustainability reporting is an organizational report
that provides information on economic, environmental, social,
and governance performance. It is the key platform for
communicating positive and negative performance, as well as capturing information that can influence policy
and operations.
