PEDAGOGY AND LANGUAGE TEACHING
TEACHING BY PRINCIPLES
Meaningful
learning
COGNITIVE PRINCIPLES
Application – Don’t
overwhelm students with
language rules, balance
rules and practice.
Students absorb
language practice.
automatically.
Students move
toward fluency and
“think” about
language less as
they progress.
• Rote learning has little
chance of Reward = Better
performance creating long-
term retention.”
• Application –Appeal to
students’ language needs
and goals, link new
knowledge to previous
knowledge, avoid pitfalls.
THE ANTICIPATION OF
REWARD
Application-use verbal
praise,encouragement,
compliments,enthusias
m, and remind students
of long-term rewards.
Reward:Better
performace
Learners are driven
to act by the
anticipation of
rewards.
INTRINSIC MOTIVATION
The learners perform the task
because it is
fun,interesting,useful, o
challenging, and no because they
anticipation some cognitive or
affective rewards from the
techers.
The most potent learning
"rewards" to enhance
performance are those that
come from the needs, wants and
desires within the learner.
STRATEGIC INVESTMENT
The methods that the learner
employs to internalize and to
perform in the language are
as important as the teacher’s
methods-or more so.
Application- Help students
become aware of their own
learning preferences and
teach them how to be good
language learners.
AUTONOMY
Teacher-
dependent
Self-
dependent
Successful
learners take
control of their
own language
learning with the
teacher as a
facilitator o
guide.
• Students feel awkward
in the learning
environment and good
teachers compensate.
• Application-support
your students, choose
techniques that
challenge but don’t
overwhelm, move from
techer-controlled to
student-controlled
activities gradually.
-Students who are self-
confidence take risk and
accomplish more.
-Application-Encourage
both accuracy and risk-
taking,carefully sequence
techniques to ensure
learner sucess.
Successfully learning a
language means
learning about the
culture,too.
Application-Discuss
cross-cultural
differences and
respect.
THE NATIVE LANGUAGE EFFECT
• In begining levels, many errors
are caused by native language
interference. Native lenguage
can also facilitate learning .
• Application- point out common
errors that come from native
language interference, teach
cognates,teach students to think
directly in the target language .


INTERLENGUAGE
As students acquire
a language ,
interlenguage is
displayed.Your
feedback helps
learners move
towards target-
language accuracy.
Application-Point out
interlenguage errors,
show students that
these errors mean
their brain is in
«lenguage learning
mode».
