2. Representation in movies is shown by either a
character’s age, gender, social class, ethnicity or
disability etc.
This can be represented through how a character is
cast, the costumes, or location they are shown.
3. In Rockabye Baby, we wanted to show the representation of class and status during
the Victorian era with especially the character of Grace. I did research on how
many of the upper class children in the 1800’s where dressed and well spoken. I
found that small white dresses where worn and young girls would be dressed in
clean white dresses. This is why i decided when looking through costumes, i
wanted to get Grace a small, white dress with a cardigan for the start to show her
higher social class and the separation between Grace and the Widower. The white
was also to represent the innocence of the young girls in the upper class.
4. With the widower in Rockabye baby, i wanted to make sure that her costume and location
would show her lower class than Grace and her mother. By using her costume of black
compared to the well dressed costume of Grace, we where able to contrast the costume of
different social classes with colours. Black is also used to hint at a loss of a husband, which
in victorian times, a women would typically wear black after the death of a husband. We
also used stereotypical locations to show the class divide between The widower and
Grace’s mother, such as a small hut for the widower and i quiet cottage to show the
different typical houses in the victorian era.
