The document analyzes the mise-en-scene of several shots that appear to be from a horror movie. In the first shot, a moon suggests the movie will be scary. Subsequent shots show a boy sleeping with a lamp for protection, darkness overtaking the boy, and a lava lamp surrounded by darkness with a hint of hope. A desk lamp casts the shadow of a mysterious creature behind a door without revealing it. Finally, a candle is blown out by an inhuman creature, plunging the room into darkness and suggesting darkness will overtake the film, as indicated by red writing surrounded by black.
2. This image looks like it’s a moon and full moon’s are
meant to represent horror liked scenarios and movies
therefore it foreshadows that the movie is going to be
scary. Furthermore the colour scheme for the image is
quite dark and we associate horrors with being dark and
terrifying.
3. The mise-en-scene in this shot is childlike suggesting the room the boy Is
sleeping in is his room. Furthermore the mise-en-scene suggests that the boy
is innocent, however also important in the scene as he is located in the
middle of the shot and is the only character in the scene. Furthermore we can
also see a lamp next to the boy and it’s the only form of light in the room
suggesting it’s protecting him from the bad and evil.
4. The mise-en-scene in this shot is representing the boys room as being
childish suggesting the boy is young. In this shot the light disappears but the
teddy bear which is far away from the boy making us wonder why isn’t the
boy cuddling the teddy bear. Also the darkness is overtaken the boy
suggesting the demons.
5. The only thing in this shot we can see is the lava lamp representing the
darkness as being powerful as it’s surrounding the lava lamp, furthermore it
foreshadows that the darkness is going to over take the film as it’s
surrounding the lava lamp. Also we get the message that even though the
darkness is surrounding everything there is also a little bit of hope as the
lamp is shining in the darnkess.
6. In this shot we get a desk lamp which is only used to show the shadow of the
mysterious creature we see behind the door. Furthermore the mise-en-scene
here is used to show the shadow of the creature instead of what it actually
looks like to make sure the audience is interested and wants to find out
furthermore in a movie what the creature is about. Also it doesn’t spoil
everything in the opening moment of the movie.
7. Here we can see the candle underneath someone’s face. The creature
doesn’t look like a human and it looks like it’s blowing out the candle. This
suggest that the creature is killing the only hope the people have in being
happy and getting away from the creature. Furthermore when it blows out the
candle the room is completely dark which suggest the darkness over took
everything. We associate colour red as meaning love, but we also associate it
with danger and blood which are typically used in horror.
8. Here the mise-en-scene ones more foreshadows what is going to happen in
the future of the film. As we can see the writing is red and we associate this
colour with love, but also with blood and danger. This tells us that in the
movie the actors are going to be surrendered by the darkness like the colour
black is surrounding the red writing. It also tells us that there will be
dangerous and a lot of parts with blood in the movie by the colour red.
