What is SLiMS?
Free open Source web-based application for library automation, under GPL v3, and developed since 2007. Still active develop, had been released 17 times and next code name is AKASIa. User and communities were build accross Indoneisa, from South East Asia, West Asia, Russia, German, South America and others
Embrace Open standars and other FOSS, as listed here
SLiMS proves that FOSS is the right choice for everyone. In our case the librarian can adopt library automation easily, cheaply, and with style. SLiMS enable them to suit library needs in an instant, building networks freely, and open an opportunity for librarian to learn web programming
To use SLiMS, librarian should have these basic competence and these are the supported ones by SLiMS. The last to points can be also the result of new competences while using SLiMS
To maximizing SLiMS usage in advance level, librarians or users are encourage to master this competence also
These information based on preleminary survey result on librarian competences in Indonesia. The responden not only cover Librarians, it aslo IT people, Teachers, and even consultants. 92 % belive their skill are improved by using SLiMS and join SLiMS user community. For it skills, SLiMS enable them to learn more on Web applicationns, PHP programmiing, Web design, and database management
Educational background of responden were vary and this proves SLiMS are for everyone and not only certain groups. Since it is still the era of Social Media, most of respondens join SLiMS community through it. They also eager to give back a contribution to community by sharing their knowledge and experience (89%). On the other hand, there is a need of mechanism to legitimate their new imporved competences for their own advancement.
