    Notes on slide 1

    1) We’re not sure that all the undercroft pedestrian access points are PRT stations. Some, like Green-31 and Green-32, are not on the PRT corridor. Unless told otherwise, we will likely assume these can be removed (about 11 towers).

MASDAR Wind, Microclimate, Energy and Thermal Comfort What opportunity is there for you! September 16, 2009
    1. The First and Currently Only Net Zero Carbon City in the World
    2. Masdar Institute for Science and Technology It’s under construction
    3. And there are PV panels everywhere! Masdar continues to be a test bed for new technologies !
    4. Masdar City, Abu Dhabi
      • Architecture – novel designs - BOD
      • Façade Design – choice of materials
      • Mechanical Engineering – new energy guide
        • Cooling load is not the dominant load – plug load is!
    5. Creating the Basis of Design with Sustainability in Mind!
      • Climate and Meteorology
      • Heat Island and Sea and Land Breeze Effects
      • Thermal Comfort
      • Wind Driven Microclimate
      • Undercroft / Utility Trench
      • Wind Towers
      • Ambient Air Quality
      • On site Sources of Air Pollution
      • Noise and Vibration
      • Sand and Dust
      • Daylighting
      • Energy Energy Energy Energy Energy Energy
    6. Climate & Meso-Scale Meteorological Assessment
      • Four Months of the year it is hot and humid with light winds that can be dust laden. Temperatures ranging up to 50C with humidity levels between 50 and 90%.
      • How do you create a walkable city under these climatic conditions?
      • You need shade and a breeze!
      Future (2030) Land-Use Current (2006) Land-Use 2006 Comparison of 2030 Wind Speeds NORTH SOUTH WEST EAST 2% 4% 6% 8% 10% NORTH SOUTH WEST EAST 2% 4% 6% 8% 10%
    7. Masdar City, Abu Dhabi Look at the building spacing!
    8. 1 Novel Designs for a Professional Community (RWDI just signed a lease)
    9. Is it too dark – the balance between daylight and energy consumption City to operate on 45watts per square meter per annum average Energy efficient lighting Natural ventilation schemes Building automation systems -2 to 3million sensors
    10. Annual cumulative insolation on Residential cluster 1 wall surfaces - Yellow = 860 kWh/m 2 - Purple = 300 kWh/m 2 - Orange = 700 kWh/m 2 - Blue = 60 kWh/m 2 - Red = 460 kWh/m 2 - Black/Grey = not analyzed Annual Cumulative Insolation - Building Walls - Sample Output
      • Levels of solar loading of the façade is shown and the positive effects of self shading is evident
Overall Residential court-yard wall surfaces A self-shaded area North
    11. How should I construct these walls so that they do not radiate heat after the sun goes down? How do I construct the exterior of the building to minimize heat transfer to the interior space? How do I do this cost effectively
    12. If it is 40 degrees outside could I really sit on these materials? How much water do these trees need? How do we balance the human need for natural shade versus cost of a scarce resource?
    13. It can be dusty!
    14. Dust Reduces direct solar intensity by 40% Need to clean the panels frequently What technologies can you offer? Remember water is expensive!
    15. PV Tilt Angle and Height above Roof
      • Optimum tilt angle of PV panels when maximizing surface area is 5 degrees. Other strategies to increase performance are found in the reports.
      • Height of the panels above roof should be approximately 2m.
      • But the infrastructure cost is too high. Is there a cheaper support system?
Insert diagrams of the roof angles 5 and 18 and 8+5 Self shading is critical issue
    16. RWDI simulation of fire scenario. Upblast-type exhaust hood, often used for kitchen exhausts. Manifolded laboratory exhausts with tall stacks. Example exhaust from subway fire . Diesel generators on startup. Potential sources of air pollution Air Quality
    17. Note RWDI’s Wind Tower
    18. Wind Tower Strategy - Locations Page Project 09-10024C Several thousand personal people movers will whisk you to your destination – no regular vehicles allowed! Who has the best battery?
      • Thermal Study – how do we passively ventilate the space?
Page Ambient Tunnel Air Temperature Wall b/w undercroft and buildings Utility Channel Ground HEAT Undercroft (PRT) Ventilation
    19. Masdar Energy Design Guideline
      • RWDI has developed a Masdar Energy Design Guideline (MEDG) to serve as a mandatory framework governing the design of energy efficient buildings in the city.
      • The goal of the MEDG is for buildings to have an 80% reduction in total annual energy demand compared to the current Abu Dhabi building standard, and a 50% reduction compared to ASHRAE 90.1-2007
      What about those plug loads?
