Insiders & Outsiders: Overcoming Conflict in the Early Church
1. Weekly News from WCUMC-6/14/2015
Together in Conflict
Acts 15:9-11,19
Then some of the believers who belonged to the party of the Pharisees
stood up and said, “The Gentiles must be circumcised and required to
keep the law of Moses.” The apostles and elders met to consider this
question. After much discussion, Peter got up and addressed them:
“Brothers, you know that some time ago God made a choice among
you that the Gentiles might hear from my lips the message of the
gospel and believe. God, who knows the heart, showed that he
accepted them by giving the Holy Spirit to them, just as he did to us.
He did not discriminate between us and them, for he purified their
hearts by faith.
Now then, why do you try to test God by putting on the necks of
Gentiles a yoke that neither we nor our ancestors have been able to
bear? No! We believe it is through the grace of our Lord Jesus that we
are saved, just as they are.”…. “It is my judgment, therefore, that we
should not make it difficult for the Gentiles who are turning to
God….”
2. I. The early church experienced conflict.
Acts 4:32- “All the believers were one in heart and mind….”
Racial Tension & Abuse of Elders & Widows. (Acts 6)
Martyrdom (Stephen Killed) (Acts 7)
Persecution & Christians Scattered (Acts 8)
II. They witnessed the Holy Spirit work & church’s growth.
Paul’s conversion (Acts 9)
Dorcas is raised from the dead (Acts 9)
Peter is miraculously released from prison (Acts 12)
Both Jews and Greeks are believing
“In essentials, unity; in non-essentials, liberty; in all things,
charity.” -Augustine
III. Real Issue of Conflict: Who is the Church For?
Outsiders (Gentile Believers, pre-Christians, new Christians)
Insiders (Jewish Believers, Christians, Church People)
IV. For the “Outsiders”
Acts 15:19
“It is my judgment, therefore, that we should not make it difficult for
the Gentiles who are turning to God….”
Ephesians 2:8-9
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not
from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one
can boast.
Galatians 5:16-18
So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the
flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the
Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each
other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. But if you are led
by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
V. For the “Insiders”:
Romans 6:1-2
What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may
increase? By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we
live in it any longer?
John 13:35
"By this all people will know that you are My disciples, if you have
love for one another"
Matthew 18:6
"If anyone causes one of these little ones--those who believe in me--to
stumble,
it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their
neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.

Help Prepare Meals for the Homeless
Congregations for the Homeless (CFH) is an organization that works to
end homelessness on the Eastside. CFH volunteers pave the way for
homeless men to break the cycle of homelessness and lead a stable
and productive life. The heart of the shelter program is the volunteers
who coordinate space for the men to sleep, who bring meals for the
men to have every day of the year, and who donate their time and
money in order to make the men feel welcome, cared for, and
provided
for with food and other essentials.
We have the opportunity to be a part of this by providing lunches
and/or dinners! They have several dates in July where help is needed.
Would
you be interested in being part of a team to provide a meal or two?
