2. Characteristics of
Prokaryote cells
Prokaryote cells are
small and simple
•Very small, about 3
•Only Single-celled
(unicellular) organisms
mm
3. Prokaryote cells outer
layer
• capsule: slimy outer coating
• cell wall: tougher middle layer
• cell membrane: delicate inner
skin
• pili: for sticking to things
• flagella: Some have, used to
move
4. Prokaryote cells have a simple
cellular organization:
• cytoplasm: inner liquid
filling
• DNA in one big loop in the
cytoplasm
• Ribosomes suspended in
cytoplasm
Micrometers in size, Eukaryotes are about 7x bigger!
Ex: E. coli.
Have students write this as a couple of sentences in their comparison routine.
Sample: Prokaryote cells have a slimy outer coating surrounding a tough cell wall, and finally a delicate cell membrane. They also have structures on their outer body, such as pili and flagella, to help them to move and stick to things.
Concept: Cellular organization. Put into a sentence or two.
Inside the cell membrane, prokaryote cells have cytoplasm, a big loop of DNA and ribosomes.

Protists – algae, animal like – Motile, Fungus-like “Decomposers” from spores and filaments

Vibrio fischeri, glow in the dark bacteria, help it survive in the ocean. This bacteria “prokaryote” lives in fish and other marine life. Can you think of other mammals or animals that have bacteria in them?
