Confederates lost almost 1/3
of their troops strength in
killed, wounded, or missing,
while the Union lost about
¼ of theirs.

three-day battle it was
decided that a national
cemetery should be
constructed at the site for
the dead on both sides.

•Edward Everett, a Senator
from Massachusetts, was
selected to give the
principle speech that day,
while President Lincoln was
asked to deliver a “few
appropriate remarks.”
5. November 19, 1863
•140 years later, no one
remembers what Everett
said, but they certainly
remember the words of
Lincoln.
