Course Description:
In this course students will learn to use their digital camera to it's full potential. They
will get an overview of how digital cameras work and be exposed to photography's history and
prominent artists. During this class we will enjoy working on individual as well as group
projects in order to develop photographic skills. There will also be critique days where we can
talk about our photographs in order to learn how to read a photo and improve on it. Students
will also have an opportunity to work with Mrs. Spilson's writing class by submitting their
photographs for the TLC yearbook.
Some topics we will be covering:
-Camera functions
-Selective focus
-Creative lighting and exposure
-Composition
-Portraiture, street photography, and events photography
Course Materials and Fees:
Students must have access to a computer in order to download and edit their photos.
The best camera for optimal learning would be a digital SLR. However, any digital
camera with a minimum of 5 mega-pixels and variable exposure controls will be adequate.
Students will be required to bring prints to class for critiques; therefore, they will need to
have prints made either by a home printer or at a professional printer such as Meijer, Wal-mart,
or Walgreen's. Weekly assignment print size will be 4x6s. We will want to make some of our
final portfolio prints in 5x7s or 8x10s.
Course tuition is $125 for the semester and is due the week before classes begin.
There is a $20 dollar material fee. This is due on the first day of class. It includes class binder
and hand-outs.
About the Instructor
Sandra Kominek graduated with a Bachelor's of Science in Fine Arts with an emphasis
in Photography from Western Michigan University. She served as the head of the photography

2. team for Valley Family Church for 7 years. She is the owner of Slice of Light Photography, a
portrait and events photography service. She has been married to her husband, Steve
Kominek, for 29 years. They have two children, who they have homeschooled for 14 years.
