Its growth in popularity is a response to the specialized training needs of a 21st century workforce. Characteristics of online coursing:  Student flexibility in both learning site and scheduling  Special software that provides online:  student-teacher asynchronous interaction  assignment application and submission  grade return and instructor feedback  Increased course offering/access due to freedom from:  geographical limitations (instructors and students)  traditional scheduling conflicts

Benefits include:  Increased student-teacher interaction  Prompt grading and personalized feedback  Highly trained staff and instructors  Diverse Curriculum which provides access to :  special topics courses rather than general surveys  instructors who are "specialists" in their subject matter
