Perlite is a naturally occurring siliceous volcanic rock that expands up to 20 times its original volume when heated above 8000-9000°C. It is mostly composed of silica (about 70-75%) along with aluminum oxide and oxides of sodium, potassium, iron, magnesium, and calcium. Perlite has a variety of uses including in gardening, construction materials, and filtration due to its expansion properties when heated.
