2. General Plot
Ashley-may want to insert
the family’s name if you
remember it, i forgot what
we had decided upon :( Also,
I’m not sure if “callie” and
“matt” are correct either
but i figured the names were
minor details! Feel free to
change them
• Moville is the town a middle-class dysfunctional family finds themselves in
after being hit hard by the economic downslide of recent years. Another
motivation for their move to this rural Iowa town is to reunite with
estranged relatives who reside in Moville. The family consists of many main
characters who clash, creating constant drama. The move becomes a
challenge for each character in a unique way and overall unsuccessful for
most of the family as far as the first season goes. Stuck in a rural town they
despise, relationships deteriorate and irritating and prying neighbors become
a source of agony to the family. As tensions heighten, a divorce begins to
unfold soon after the pilot episode. When many mismatched characters
who all have their own quirky traits become the newest residents of Moville
and have to deal with the town’s unfortunate residents, it creates a story
that is both bizarre yet relatable that will engage the at-home middle-class
adult target audience.
3. Primary Characters
• Tammie-mother of the household who constantly finds herself being nagged by her 4-year-old son,
frustrated beyond reason with her deadbeat 20-year-old son, and to top it off annoyed with and
hassled by her 16-year-old daughter. All this, before even mentioning her failed relationship and
husband who seems to have hit a mid life crisis. Plus, his annoying senile mother who has taken
residence with them in Moville. Lead role.
• Frank-distraught father of the household who has recently lost his job as the GM of a Walser car
dealership in the recession and led them in the move to Moville. Soon after the first season begins he
finds unfortunate employment at REC (Rural Electric Cooperative), and takes the job only to make
ends meet. He is also targeted by his out of control children along with his soon-to-be-ex wife and
faulted for all of their ridiculous problems. The stress on Frank and Tammie leads the couple to their
breaking point and Frank furrows deeper into a mid-life depression. Lead role.
• Mary-Ann-elderly grandmother who is incredibly senile and rarely has any idea what is happening
around her. She is slightly more of a background character, but never fails to provide heightened
distress and grief for all members of the family. She is Frank’s mother and the children often get fed
up with having to deal with Mary-Ann.
4. Primary Characters
•
cont.
Trent-The 4-year-old boy in the family. Wild and annoying. He likes to talk meaninglessly while
babbling on and will never ignore a change to tattle on someone for doing just about anything. It is
evident he has extreme attention issues, along with well developed ADHD which causes him to have
difficulty sitting still, even for just a few moments. He tears up the house and often breaks items
valuable to his mother and sister. It can be inferred late in the first season that many of his problems
are onset from the recent difficulty his family has ensued from Frank losing his job and the family’s
move. Often says “oooooh im tellin mom!!”, but she doesn’t care to hear which upsets him.
• Callie-The 16-year-old girl in the family. She is moody and has lost all of her friends as a result of the
move. For this reason, she hates her father and is horrifyingly rude to both of her parents. Eventually
as the first season comes to a close, she can oddly be seen as the first one to begin warming to
Moville and meets a new love interest, as well as obtains a job at a local golf course selling
concessions. She begins to drive in the middle of the first season and is disgusted with how “hick”
Moville is. She is often left to take care of Mary-Ann when she would rather be out trying to make
friends or possibly find fun in Moville, which causes disagreement and drama between her and her
parents. She also fights with her older brother regularly.
• Matt-The 20-year-old boy in the family. With little to no ambitions in life, he is the deadbeat of the
family and weighs everyone down. He stays at home most of the time and doesn’t seem to care much
about getting a job or finding a college to attend. He is blatantly unaware of how unmotivated he is
and gets deeply offended when other members of the family comment on his deadbeat status. He
also is disgusted by how “hick” Moville is and this seems to be the only thing he and his sister can
agree upon.
