Young Goodman Brown Verisimilitude
Verisimilitude in Young Goodman Brown
In Nathaniel Hawthorne s short story Young Goodman Brown , the main character was left
wondering whether the occurrences were a dream, or in fact reality. However. it is the author s
intriguing story telling technique that creates such an atmosphere that even the readers are left
asking whether or not it was a dream. Hawthorne s writing style and use of literary elements such
as plot, characterization and theme, portrays a compelling, verisimilar story that many readers at
some point in their lives can relate to.
Mainly, Hawthorne uses the plot to create verisimilitude. The short storyheavily reflects the reality
of the 17th century. The story begins with young Goodman Brown leaving his wife, Faith, behind to
embark on a journey into the forest at dusk. However, the author maintains a mysterious atmosphere
by withholding the reason for the journey. Not far into the forest, Brown encounters a peculiar, old
man who reveals Brown s Puritan family s involvement in the harming of Quakers. The pair then
encounters a religious elder from Brown s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

takes tremendous pride in his family and their spirituality. He declares, We are people of prayer
and good works to boot (page 344). There are also similarities between the mysterious old man and
the devil. He advises Goodman to leave Faith and continue the journey. The old man reveals he
helped commit heinous crimes such as: ____________. Hawthorne also manages to use the

A Commercialized Christmas Essay
One can almost cut through the irony of hearing Bing Crosby sing It s beginning to look a lot like
Christmas on the radio when the temperature is sixty and the first frost of winter is still weeks
away. As citizens of the United States in this day and age, people are most likely all too accustomed
with this typical rush promoted between important festivities. It s exclusively about generating
maximum revenue for the large corporations as frantic shoppers attempt to assuage their stress
through hour upon hour of incessant shopping; arising in our society today, an important question
of whether or not this avaricious behavior communicates total loss of understanding as to what the
true meaning of the season represents. In my opinion, some... Show more content on

Within our culture, it seems to be of much more convenience to attend a Christmas Eve sale at
Macy s rather than the Christmas Eve vigil at a local church. Days such as BLACK Friday really
do give a good characterization to the way we as a whole have become. Next, one is unable to
enjoy the true spirit of the season the togetherness, the contentment, and the unadulterated joy
when the only thing singed into our minds is the need to prepare for the next quickly
approaching holiday. Before you can even begin to think of the forthcoming celebration, all
consumer based retailers have their shelves stocked high with goods pertaining to seasons
months in the future. Sears, Kmart and Home Depot were among the first wave of retailers to set
up their holiday displays and merchandise during the last week of September ( Kmart, Sears, and
Home Depot ). It seems that, at this point every year, Halloween and Thanksgiving are to be
forgotten, shipped away to the land of misfit rationalizations; the biggest moneymaker of them all
is the only thing that retail stores want you to remember. It s impossible to see the beauty of the
multitude of colors painted across the leaves of changing trees, to watch the snow gently blanket
the cold, hard, winter ground, or to enjoy the company of several generations of loved ones

The Mound Building Peoples Of The Eastern United States
Throughout history there have been ebbs and flows identified within all facets of human history,
and the Native American mound builders were no different. The mound building peoples of the
Eastern United States (U.S.) along with the Aztec s, Mayan and the Inca were revolutionary
economists, farmers and communal architects. Before the Europeans came in contact with the
mound building tribes in the 1500 s, a thriving nation was had developed into an economic
powerhouse and maintain its position of power and commerce for a few hundred years. We would
be remiss to not preserve the archeological remnants of the Adena, Hopewellian and later the
Mississippians. Each of the many built mounds holds unique facts and details to how the nation
thrived and developed over several centuries.
One of the most influential and progressive cultures in North American history was the mound
building Native American tribes. The most significant aspects of the mound building peoples was
the multitude of mounds built for burials, ceremonial and ritual events, temples and other important
buildings, and effigy mounds in the shape of various animals (Colin Calloway, 2012, p. 32).
Archeologists classify mound building Indians of the Southeast into three major chronological
/cultural divisions: the Archaic, the Woodland, and the Mississippian (United StatesNational Park
Service, n.d.). Although Mississippians are known for their mounds; they were also the first fully
domesticated farmers cultivating

Employee Compensation and Corporate Culture- What Works
Amir Hejazi
Employee Compensation and Corporate Culture: What Works?
When determining what method to use to compensate employees, a company must be aware of the
impact that different compensation methods can have on employee performance, and on
organizational culture. Unfortunately, there is no one size fits all answer to the question of
employee compensation. Some employees will respond very well to a program that other
employees might balk at. Similarly, some companies or industries may flourish under one sort of
compensation scheme, while others are more successful with different schemes. This paper will
examine the various methods of compensation, and will speculate on what it is about compensation
that acts as a motivator for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another potential issue that prevents performance based compensation from being completely
effective is the method of implementation. What performance an employee is being compensated
for is just as important as (if not more important than) the fact the he is being compensated for
performance. If an employee is being compensated for sales he makes, he may find himself
cutting corners or ignoring rules to make sales that he ought not to make. Ho et al use Sears as
an example of this phenomenon. In 1992, Sears ended a policy of performance based
compensation that had failed miserably, because auto repair salespeople had performed $15
million dollars of unnecessary services for which Sears was ultimately forced to refund payment,
or pay other settlement costs. The issue was that Sears was paying their salespeople based on the
number of sales they made, thus giving them a motivation to perform unnecessary services, despite
the fact that this would cause the company in incur long run costs. Thus, performance based pay is
not necessarily a good thing, especially if it is linked to an aspect of performance that may not
directly relate to overall company performance. One might try to learn a lesson from this example
and determine that employees should

David And Goliath And Casey At The Bat Essay
In the Bible story, David and Goliath and the poem, Casey at the Bat both of the main characters
share similarities and differences. One of the similarities is that both men are confident about
themselves. David was confident because he knew that God was on his side, and he could not
lose. Casey from, Casey at the Bat acted very confident because everybody was shouting his
name, and he thought he was going to win. Another way Casey and David were comparable is
that they were both fearless and courageous. Casey let the ball go on purpose, and then he received
a strike. He was being fearless and as a result of his action he struck out. He could have played it
safe and swung at the first one, but he decided to be daring. It can be proved that David was
fearless and for that... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To add to this thought, David was positive he was going to win that fight. He knew that God was on
his side that was why he was confident in himself. In, Casey at the Bat , Casey was unwavering
and steady because he was focused on fame and hitting that last ball. He was absolutely positive
of his ability. In result of his actions he struck out and lost the game for the team. Both Casey
and David has a lot of comparable traits, but they were also different in many ways. In the Bible
story, David and Goliath , David was unselfish. He went out there and fought for everybody. He
was not concerned about himself. The poem, Casey at the Bat says, That ain t my style, said
Casey. Strike one, the umpire said. From the benches, black with people, there went up a
muffled roar, Using the poem, it can be inferred that Casey was selfish and for this purpose he
was sticking out so the people would cheer his name louder. He was very self absorbed and
because of that he lost the game for everybody. That also goes hand in hand with another
difference. Casey is not dependable or

Pros And Cons Of Brian Mulroney
Martin Brian Mulroney was the 18th Prime Minister of Canada and indeed a leader full of great
qualities (Sawatsky 7). Born in a small town in Quebec, Mulroney was a bilingual Anglophone who
harbored a tremendous political ambition (22). He belonged to the Progressive Conservative party
and came to power in 1984 (Parker 22). Mulroney significantly affected the Canadian history
through his socio political, environmental and economic reforms. He had a powerful, tremendous
and symbolic impact on Canadian history, socio politically by passing the Indian Act, the
Multiculturalism Act and introducing Meech Lake and Charlottetown Accords., environmentally
by signing Air Quality Agreement, the Montreal Protocol and cancelling the National Energy
Program... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
First of all, the introduction of Goods and Services Tax by Mulroney built the foundation for
eliminating federal deficit, which occurs when the government spends more money than it makes
(Parker 22). Deficit increased the selling off of the capital assets in Canada to finance the purchases
of slowly diminishing goods and services, which undermined future production and raised
unemployment rates and inflation (Swatsky 309). Not only did the introduction of GST
overcame deficit by a significant amount, it also proved to be an important source of generating
revenues, improving the competitive position of Canada s economy in the world and acting as
an efficient way for managing the country (Good and Bad sides of GST). This could be justified
though the fact that when Mulroney introduced the GST, the revenues grew by one third, and
GDP by 1.2%. Although it was not enough to stop deficit at first, it did slow it down and
eventually hauled it (Coyne). But at the same time, his attempt to stop deficit limited his ability
to deliver the promises he made in terms of services and infrastructures.(Info base Learning).
Secondly, the signing off the Free Trade Agreement with United States and North American
Free Trade Agreement with the addition of Mexico came as a great economic contribution to
Canadian history as it marked the creation of the largest free trade region in the world. With the
elimination of tariff and non tariff barriers, NAFTA opened gates for Canada towards economic
prosperity and growth. With no imposed taxes, NAFTA provided Canada access to the wider
range of Mexican and U.S markets, expanding Canada s productivity and allowed Canada to
attract more U.S investors, firms and companies to Canada, to invest in the wide variety of natural
resources, and. This also led to a huge burst in job opportunities in the trade and service sectors

Lupus
Lupus is a potentially life threatening disease that effects about 1.5 million Americans. Lupus can
effect many different parts of the body. Lupus is a type of autoimmune system disorder in which
the body cannot distinguish the difference between foreign antibodies and its own organs. So
basically what happens is that the body ends up attacking its own organs thinking they are foreign
substances. (The Lupus Foundation of America)
There are three different types of Lupus. They are: Discoid, Systematic, and Drug Induced. Discoid

Some may include: Achy joints, Fever of over 100 degrees, arthritis, extreme fatigue, skin rashes,
anxiety, kidney involvement, pain in the chest area or trouble breathing, rash, light sensitivity, hair
loss, blood clotting problems, seizures, and mouth and nose ulcers. This is a giant list of symptoms,
but many people who have Lupus do not experience more then one or two of these symptoms. (The
Lupus Foundation of America, The Lupus Page)
There are many different ways to treat Lupus. The most common treatment does not cure Lupus,
but minimizes the symptoms and reduces inflammation. Support groups to help relieve anxiety and
regular exercise can help treat the disease as well. There are a bunch of drugs that can be prescribed
to help treat the specific symptoms. Most of these drugs are anti inflammatory drugs. Some of them
are as simple as over the counter painkillers like Tylenol, while others can be powerful steroids with
anti inflammatory agents in them. (The Lupus Foundation of America, The Lupus Page)
In conclusion Lupus is definitely a very serious disease that we must learn more about. My great
aunt had Lupus for over ten years and during that time suffered in ways no person should have to.
She would fall down constantly and break bones. Near the end of her life, she would break bones
doing stuff as simple as getting out of bed.

The Crucible Vengeance Quotes
There are many great plays that have been written throughout our history. Many of them are very
specific in what it is trying to say. One of the most famous plays written is The Crucible by
Arthur Miller. The Crucible is a play that is based off of the Salem Witch Trials that took place
in the late 1600s. During this time period, many innocent people were accused of witchcraft. This
was due to the people s lack of knowledge on how our universe works. Arthur Miler uses many
different motifs in his play, but one of the most significant motifs is vengeance. In The Crucible,
Arthur Miller presents the idea that vengeance is used to corrupt the minds of the community s
people. In The Crucible, vengeance is a very powerful motif that Arthur Miller uses to show how

Bertolt Brecht was a German playwright, theatre critic, and director. He created and developed epic
theatre with the belief that theatre is not solely for entertainment but also tools for politics and
social activism. Previous theatre performances offered a form of escapism. The audience would
become emotionally invested in the performance. In contrast to the suspension of disbelief, Brecht
never wanted the audience to fall into the performance. He wanted the audience to make judgments
on the argument dealt in the play. The aim of epic theatreis to detach the audience from any

In order to break the illusions Brecht used various techniques. Only the necessary props are used
during the play to portray themes or ideas to help indicate a character s status or profession. This
technique helps the audience acknowledge the idea of watching a play rather being emotionally
attached to the play. When there are few props prepared, the play itself does not look realistic
causing the audience to think about the situation. The performance seems realistic if minor props
are also used during the play. However, Brecht did not want this. He wanted the audience to be
constantly aware of the idea that they are watching a performance on stage. To prevent melodrama
or emotion from overtaking the audience, comic songs and music are often incorporated to provide
emotional details. This can be extremely disturbing to the audience unfamiliar to Theatre of
Alienation yet it leads to cheerful, upbeat tunes with disturbing lyrics. Musicians, lighting
mechanics and changing costumes are visible during the performance. This technique also allows
that audience to be emotionally detached from the story because they are aware of them watching a
play. When audiences are not suspended in disbelief, their intellectual response to the drama
increases. The stage uses white light. Lights would originally create mood or

Certified Nursing Assistant Introduction: A CNA, a Certified Nursing Assistant, is a person in
the health care field who helps patients or clients with healthcare needs under the supervision of
a Registered nurse or a Licensed Practical Nurse. CNAs are the backbone of nursing. They are
the foundation that makes patient care possible and easier for everybody. Being a CNA is not

Cultural Comparisons of India and China
NATIONAL CULTURE OF CHINA AND INDIA IN THE PERSPECTIVE OF HUMAN
RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
Introduction
1.Increased business globalization, emergence of new economic hubs like BRIC countries (Brazil,
Russia, India and China) as well as more intense competition among organizations at the domestic
and international level alike over the past two decades, have necessitated the need for studies in the
comparative Human Resource Management (HRM) (Budhwar amp; Sparrow, 2002a). As a result,
a growing number of conceptual (Aycan, 2005; Edwards amp; Kuruvilla, 2005) and empirical

Hall describes context as the information that surrounds an event. In high context societies, the
situation, the external environment and non verbal cues are crucial in the communication process.
However, this approach fits much better with a generic concept of culture, in the sense of a broad
cultural community such as Arabs, Latins or Chinese, than with the constrained boundaries of a
nation state, where individual and organizational diversity allows for a pluralistic coexistence of
both low and high context.
9.The work of Kluckhohn and Strodtbeck (1961) offers another useful framework to understand
cultural differences. Viewing culture as a set of assumptions and deep level values regarding
relationships among humans and between humans and their environments, Kluckhohn and
Strodtbeck proposed four basic value orientations, which can be further divided into sub dimensions
to capture the complex cultural variations across societies. The major orientations in their model
are human nature (evil, mixed, good), man nature relationship (subjugation, harmony, dominant),
social relation with people (hierarchical, collateral, individual), human activity (being, becoming,
doing), and time sense (past, present, future). The cultural orientation framework has been adopted
by researchers to explain variations of HRM practices across countries (e.g., Aycan et al., 2007;

The State Of Michigan Is A Word Formed By The Ojibwa Tribe
Water Essay:
The state of Michigan is also called mishigamaa which was a word formed by the Ojibwa tribe.
Mishigamaa means large water or large lake. This state is known for its large and beautiful
bodies of water. In my experiences, I have noticed that Michigan has extremely fresh and clean,
large bodies of water in comparison to other Midwest states. Michigan involves two peninsulas,
the Upper and Lower Peninsula. They are separated by the Straits of Mackinac and a few nearby
islands. The Straits of Mackinac connects two of the Great Lakes; Lake Michigan and Lake Huron.
They are connected by the Mackinac Bridge. Michigan covers 58,110 square miles of land, 38,575
spare miles of the Great Lakes and 1,305 square miles of inland waters (2015 pg.1).
The water cycle represents how water is exchanged and cycled through Earth s land, oceans, and
atmosphere (2010 pg.1). Evaporation, condensation, and precipitation are all three main factors
within the water cycle. Evaporation occurs when a liquids surface changes to gas. For example,
when water from rivers, oceans or lakes evaporate, it becomes water vapor. Condensation occurs
when gas changes to a liquid. For example, clouds form when water vapor condescends.
Precipitation is described as any liquid or solid water that falls to earth from above. A great and
simple example would be rain, snow or hail (2010 pg.1). Within the water cycle, there are three
states of water: solid, liquid and gas. Most of Earth s freshwater is

Cinderellastories. Both stories have the daughter who was beautiful and kind, evil stepmother,
stepsister(s) and the godmother . But yet have different stories. The mother of the children did
not wait for her husband as she promised. And was turned into a goat for her punishment. One
day the Brahman abjured his wife not to eat anything without him or she would be turned into a
goat . Along time passed by and neither of them broke their word, until one day the wife while
giving food to her children and took a little taste and her husband was not present and the moment

Application Of Agropolitan Center Development
REVIEW OF LITERATURE
Rural development has been discussed extensively in the literature by various writers from different
disciplines. The universal objective of rural development is to improve the quality of life of rural
people. This is facilitated upon a continuous process by government, non governmental
organizations (NGO) and different actors at the (inter) national, state and local levels. Without
doubt, this involves how best to organize rural area resources and potentials (especially human and
economic potentials) so as to achieve an increase in the overall standard of living of the rural
community dwellers. According to Halwart et, al (2003), the idea is to sustain the growth of rural
economies, improve rural community livelihood and to promote food security through the
improvement of food supply, employment and income. This chapter is divided into four parts. Part
one reviews some approaches to the application of agropolitan center strategy in rural physical
planning in selected third world countries. Part two examines the basic theories that relate to the
spatial organization of human settlements by some well known writers such as Friedman,
Christaller and others. Part three relate these theories to the present research and part four looked at
large scale agriculture and rural development in the context of aquaculture.

The Myths And Rituals At Mycenaean And Minoan Sites
Sir Arthur Evans in the twentieth century, helped to explain many existing questions about Homer
s epics and provided archaeological evidence for many of the mythological details about gods and
heroes. Unfortunately, the evidence about myths and rituals at Mycenaean and Minoan sites is
entirely monumental, as the Linear B script was used mainly to record inventories, although certain
names of gods and heroes have been tentatively identified. Secondly, visual sources sometimes
represent myths or mythical scenes that are not attested in any extant literary source. In some cases,
the first known representation of a myth in geometric art predates its first known representation in
late archaic poetry, by several centuries. The earlier inhabitants of the Balkan Peninsula were an
agricultural people who, using Animism, assigned a spirit to every aspect of nature. Eventually,
these vague spirits assumed human forms and entered the local mythology as gods. When tribes
from the north of the Balkan Peninsula invaded, they brought with them a new pantheon of gods,
based on conquest, force, prowess in battle, and violent heroism. Other older gods of the
agricultural world fused with those of the more powerful invaders or else faded into insignificance.
After the middle of the Archaic period, myths about relationships between male gods and male
heroes became more and more frequent, indicating the parallel development of pedagogic pederasty,
thought to have been introduced around 630 BC.

Dog Park Speech
As was said in the passage having a dog
park aound is a good thing. Dogs are like humans, they need their excerise and social time too. If a
dog doesnt get the right amount of excerise the dog will act out. This means chewing on things
more than usual, going potty where they know theyre not suposed to and eating less. Having a park
specifically for that reason would be great. Lees summit has their own dog park nearby and Ive

Effects Of A Solar Eclipse
What is a solar eclipse? What effect might a solar eclipse have on one? A solar eclipse occurs
when the moon passes between the sun and the earth. This makes the sun align behind the moon as
it blocks the sun s beautiful and gleaming rays. When the sun is behind the moon, it seems as if it
is as dark as night and makes the sunlook like a ring of fire high in the sky. During a solar eclipse,
many things can happen that one would be astonished by observing such as, the actual object,
changes in the atmosphere, animals and people s behavior, and emotional and sensual feelings. The
object that appeared in the sky had everyone s attention and concentration, not only that day, but
weeks before. Everyone had been talking about the upcoming solar eclipse. Teachers planned
lessons, and posters lined the walls to inform students of expectations and safety measures. A solar
eclipse, an event appealing to the eye, is an unforgettable phenomenon that can leave someone with
the experience of a lifetime.
On the day of the eclipse, the view of the sun was oddly bright and dim. The sky was as bright as
a sun rise early in a summer s morning. It was so bright I was tempted, yet scared to look at it.
The whole Middleton High School separated to go outside and watch the eclipse in different areas.
The location where we watched the eclipse only allowed us to see the moon partially blocking the
sun. We all saw the sun slowly lose its rays as the moon raced to appear in front. Although the total

Rejection of Lethal Injection Essay examples
Dictionary.com says the definition of lethal injection is the act or instance of injecting a drug for
purposes of capital punishment or euthanasia. In other words, putting chemicals into a person to kill
them. There are four other types of execution. There is death by electrocuting the subject, death by
putting the subject in to a gas chamber, death by hanging the subject, and death by a firing squad
shooting the subject ( Methods of Execution ). Lethal injection is not the best way to execute the
subject because the requirements are not thorough, the procedures are too complicated, and the
expenses of everything combined are too great. The death penalty is not for just any crime, and

The procedures are not taken lightly when preforming the execution. Although machines were made
for lethal injections and where once used frequently nationally, now a day many states prefer not to
use the machines due to the worry of failure. Sometimes prison employees are hired for the
execution. In some states, the same execution team is used every time, but others switch the job out
between shifts of other employees (Bonsor). The execution group is divided in to another room or
behind a curtain. This is so nobody, including any eyewitnesses, does not see anything. The warden
will give the signal to the injection team to begin to inject the two to three drugs into the IVs. There
is only one actual executioner injecting the lethal drugs. No one knows who is injecting in to the
real prisoner or in to a fake prisoner/dummy bag (Bonsor). Although these are just safety precautions
for the executioners, it takes too much time to perform a lethal injection execution. The drugs take
some, little time, but still some time to inject and come into use. The first thing that is given to the

The Transformation of Roman Catholicism Essay
The Transformation of Roman Catholicism Hans Kung presented a possible major retransformation
for Roman Catholic Christianity. He believed that
the renewal of the Catholic Church willed by the Second Vatican Councilhas come to a standstill.
(Kung:1971:9)
The transformation of Roman Catholicism both by the councils of Trent, Vatican I and II was
believed to have been needed in order to look ay the way in which the Christian tradition
encapsulates the truth of the religion. Both the Vatican councils attempted to transform Roman
Catholicism.

Criticism of the legalistic, centralistic and rationalistic narrowing of the concepts of faith, doctrine
and infallibility. In addition Kung questioned whether faith depends at all on infallibility statements
or on infallibly true propositions.
In this essay I am going to look at the questions raised by Kung and attempt to critically analyse
these against the doctrine of infallibility. In order to do this I will take each of Kung criticisms of
the Roman Catholic concept of church infallibility, as outlined above and examine them.
The theological concern therefore of Kung is the reform of the Roman Catholic church
against a Biblical and an ecumenical horizon
(Haring:1998:116)
under minding the
stability and immutability of doctrinal statements as guarantees of truth especially when they are
obligated to Vatican I s rationalistic and legalistic concept of faith.

For Kung the discussion about infallibility is a discussion about the way in which truth is dealt
with inside the church that it hermeneutical and at the same time related to church practice, it is not
a discussion about the capacity of the Catholic Church for truth.
Kung firstly took the concept of infallibility and questioned its biblical basis. Kung claims that it

Social Media Networking Technologies
Social Media Networking Technologies Introduction The potential of social media to significantly

Religious Tolerance In The American Colonies
Religious Tolerance
In the year 1776, the American Colonies drafted the Declaration of Independence. This document
symbolized freedom from Great Britain. According to Essentials of American Government Roots
and Reform, Englishmen and other Europeans left home seeking to enhance their fortunes. With
them came a host of laborers who hoped to find their own opportunities for riches [in the
American colonies] (O Connor, Sabato, and Yanus 6). As the colonies grew in size and stability,
an influx of Englishmen came to America for a variety of incentives. Two of these incentives

This argument is based on information found on oyez.org. In 1963 a federal program, Higher
Education Facilities, created grants for educational institutions. These institutions were sponsored
by local churches. The grant specifically said the new buildings could have no religious
associations for twenty years. After the twenty year period, the building could be used for any
purpose the church needed it to. The grant attempted to neutralize the moral background that may
influence the college students in the new building. In 1970 a law suit was filed. The sponsors
believed if they were sponsoring these educational institutions, they should be able to use the
building for religious reasons. In 1971 the court decided the twenty year wait for the building to be
able to be used for any recreational purpose was unconstitutional. The court argued grants are
considered federal aid; therefore, the federal government has no right to intervene with religious
purpose. The first amendment claims the federal government cannot deny anyone of practicing
religion anywhere including in a granted building. The court also said since the money was not
used to fund religious activity the building was like any other building. The court believed college
students would be able to decide with their own opinions on rather to attend these church services.
The services were not mandatory to attend. Also, the court decided the period

Legal Developments in Western Civilization
Legal Developments in Western Civilization
The span of Western Civilization encompasses many notable achievements in legal development.
As empires rise and expand, it becomes necessary to create a legal code that standardizes
punishment, institutes a form of common law, and protects society from arbitrary abuses of
power. These principles were formally established relatively early in the western world, and
became the foundations upon which later government institutions created their legal systems. The
Code of Hammurabi, the Twelve Tables, and Magna Carta, all represent key moments in the
evolution of legal thought and practice. Not only do they show the legal and political direction of
the empires, but also the progression of their social values The Babylonian empire s success was
due in large part to its powerful sixth king, Hammurabi who reigned from 1792 1750 B.C.E. At the
age of twenty five he succeeded to the throne and devoted the first thirty years of his reign to wars
of conquest. His military success meant that his empire now possessed a diverse population that
was difficult to placate. To aid in unifying the empire and making punishments standard and
universal, he issued the Code of Hammurabi. In three hundred clauses, Hammurabi established the
rudiments of common law. Though not a set of statutes to be cited, it did provide judges with
examples of past decisions handed down for various disputes. His concept of justice was reflected

Why Is Catcher In The Rye Still Relevant Today
Old School Versus New School The Catcher in The Rye is a book written by J.D. Salinger and
is widely debated whether the book is still relevant to people today. The story is based in the
1950 s about a boy who struggles to fit in and to understand human nature in a quest he pursues
to find himself and his place in this world. The Catcher In The Rye is still relevant to people
today because the emotions people felt back then are exactly the same today, many people still

the same necessities as before. The book is is relevant very relevant as people experience the same

Kids can relate to the book more than ever because the emotions and hardships Holden goes
through are almost exactly like the ones kids face today. The book can connect to every student
that reads it and those have can support that the book is, as universal as it is timeless
(Maliabadi). The book is universal because its themes are universal, everyone can connect and
find some sort of emotional attachment to Holden and his journey. Many people sympathize
with him because in some way they have suffered as he has, everyone has lost someone or
something, or eventually will, just like Holden. Many people may argue that the book is clearly
outdated as kids are a lot more driven while back in the day kids weren t as pressured to succeed,
Teenagers are more interested in Harvard than flunking high school (Schuessler, Jennifer). Kids
seem to be a lot more school oriented as well as more inclined to strive for success than kids
were 40 years ago. Many kids these days are studying hours every day and Holden has found
himself flunked out of almost every school he has attended. The book is outdated because a lot
of kids can t relate with holden s inability to succeed and that is a turnoff for a book these days.
However People still have the same goals and deeper meaning which allows readers to really
connect to Holden. since Holden s times as a teen it still is very human, and sometimes only
human to experience the, rebellious search to understand human nature and himself (Clay,J). This
quest is so important very everyone to pursue and Holden never really figured it out a his whole
idea of the catcher in the rye was debunked. It is normal for those who are lost, to inquire about life
itself as it is still a mystery to so many people.

Communication Techniques Of Harvey Milk
An Assessment of the Various Communication Techniques of Harvey Milk. By Christian Samson
Harvey Milk was the first openly gay politician to be publically elected to office in California
with his entry to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. It was in November 1978 that a fellow
conservative politician who strongly opposed Milk s views on anti discrimination and gay
rights assassinated Milk whilst he sat in his office. Milk had only been in office for 11 months
and his death sent shockwaves through the community. Milk s message as a public figure
during the 1970s around greater rights and freedoms for gay people was powerful and arguably,
in many ways, remains relevant today. Pearson (2005) maintains that Milk was pivotal in the
gay rights movement and that gay rights are still an issue in the United States and many other
places around the world. Two texts that perhaps best captured Milk s messages and the powerful
ways through which he communicated them are an interview from the free gay San Francisco
Kalendar magazine from 1973, and You ve Got to have Hope, or The Hope Speech , a public
address from Milk intended to embolden a strong GLBTQ nationalism within the Castro, while
also appealing for an alliance with other disenfranchised groups and straight folk (Milk et al. 2013

Enzyme Reaction Rate
Enzymes play a critical role in metabolic processes by speeding up chemical reactions. Enzymes
lower energy barriers by acting as a catalyst for a reaction. An example is hydrolysis that occurs in
glucose. Without enzymes glucose will still hydrolyze, but at a slow rate. With the right enzyme
hydrolysis will occur even more rapidly than before. Enzymes work by having a substrates enter
their active site. Induce fit (the substrates forms weak bonds with the enzymecausing the enzymes
shape to enfold the substrate) than occurs to the enzyme. It must be kept in mind however, that the
enzymes only work on specific substrates and not all of them also known as enzyme specificity.
There are many factors that may affect enzyme reaction rates. The pH and temperatureof the
environment that the enzyme is in may denature the enzyme if it is not in the optimal area for the
specific enzyme. If the pH and temperature of the environment is in the optimal area than the
enzyme will work at its best if not than reaction rates may slow down. In competitive inhibition a
competitive inhibitor mimics the substrate. This causes the substrate not to enter the active site of
the enzyme. Likewise there is noncompetitive inhibition where a... Show more content on

The final product then reacts the allosteric site of the first enzyme. This causes the first enzyme
shape to be altered, preventing the substrate from bonding to it a forming a product. Without the
first key enzyme to from a product none of the other enzymes further down the series can catalyze a
reaction. In the case of ATP, feedback inhibition is key to regulating the molecule and preventing
energy from being wasted. When ATP is very abundant catabolism slows down as the molecule
binds to enzymes inhibiting them. When ADP (a ATP molecule that had a phosphate group
removed) is abundant than they act as an activator promoting the catabolism of

The Washington Family Analysis
The Washington Family by Edward Savage, painted from 1789 1796, features American s original
First Family. (Fig. 1) George Washington sits around a table in his Mount Vernon home with his
wife, Martha and her two grandchildren, whom the Washingtons adopted following the death of
their parents. Behind them, a household slave stands ready to serve and a vast landscape sprawls
outside the window. Though the painting appears to be a simple, familyportrait, it actually contains
deeper, political messages.
Savage depicts George Washingtonin a domestic setting to showcase his personal life outside of
the presidency; he is depicted with his family and in his private home. However, he is also shown
in uniform, alluding to his role as general. He does not grasp his sword, but instead rests his hand
on a stack of papers, representing his role as statesman. It was well known that Washington
intended to step out of the public sphere following the war before being elected, and that he
continued to long for a quiet life at home throughout his presidency. In this work, Savage depicts
Washington filling roles of general, statesman and patriarch, making the statement that he can fulfil
all three roles. Further, by depicting Washington as a father figure in his domestic setting, Savage
invites his viewers to connect him with the founding of the nations and thus visually establish him
as the Father of our country. Considering the popular print version of the work distributed around

Practical Considerations Examining the practicality of the group parameters is paramount to
delivering the most effective treatment possible. 1.The counseling group is a closed group, as
the formation of bonds, trust, and process of the shared experience is more vulnerable to being
disrupted if the group was open. 2.In addition to the above, each week builds upon the
information shared in the previous week in relation to disclosures and sharing of experiences as
well as building upon problem solving strategies; thus, additional group members later on would

The Tell-Tale Heart Insanity
In The Tell Tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe, the main character, the narrator, kills the old man
because he disliked his eye. He claims his motivation is neither the old man wronging him nor
desire for money, but rather a fear of the man s pale blue eye. The narrator insists that he is not
crazy, even though he goes to the elderly man s apartment and observes the man sleeping. The
narrator shows clear signs of insanity by having no reason or killing the old man, confessing to the
perfect crime, and enjoying murdering an innocent person. The narrator spends a great amount time
carefully planning out the murder of the innocent old man, but demonstrates no logical reason for
killing the old man, which makes the narrator appear mad. The narrator... Show more content on

The narrator tries to kill the old man for seven long nights but I found the eye always closed and
so it was impossible to do the work (Poe 82). He tries for many nights, which the narrator
proceeds with caution attempting to kill the old man (81). He says how he wisely proceeded
while about to kill the old man. The old man says, It took me an hour to place my whole head
within the opening , he is very determined to kill the old man (82). The narrator obviously took
the time to carefully plan out the old man s death. The narrator not only seems insane by
planning out every detail to perfection, but confesses to the police! Many critics believe he
confesses out guilt, but that is false. The narrator makes up his own game. His game is to
outsmart police, making himself feel better, thinking he is very brilliant. The narrator thinks he
has already won the game by smiled as he thinks to himself, for what had I to fear (84)? He does
not realize, until later that he has already lost by having the police come into the house, which
means they were suspicious, but he wants to believe he is a genius, so he thinks that if he
confesses he beats the police. When the reality is that the narrator does not win in the game. It is
one thing to cautiously, oh so cautiously and cunningly commit a crime, but to confess to it, makes
the narrator even more insane

The Unethical Decisions of Cutting Corners on Construction...
Ethics
The reason that most people go into construction is because it is a job skill that can be used world
wide, and there are many different ways to make a decent living. Due to the current economic
situation, the construction business has been sluggish. Contractors have been earning a smaller
amount than they used to and this causes, most contractors and subs to cut corners and the
customer or owner pays the ultimate price of lousy job. Most of these activities are unethical and
dangerous.
Ethics is described as the duty as a person to do the righteous actions and have respectable morals.
If someone is ethical then he or she will be able to associate between what is right and wrong, and
carry out ethical acts in all situations. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Situational ethics can be when hard hats are required when working outside the building but not
when inside due to the heat. Ethical behavior should not wave around but steady and firm. One
of the major areas in which ethics have to be implemented and is tied into is safety. Even though
safety is everyone s job, it is theoretically the job of the contractor to safety, which is ethical and
moral part of the job. As a contractor, he is the one in charge to provide and enforce a safe
working environment and also hiring a safety engineer to oversee this part of the project. If the
contractor defrauds on safety for any reason, it is considered unethical. Due to this stringent rules
and previous mistakes, this is a big priority that must be done.
Unethical practices in construction are bid rigging, bid shopping, and front end loading. These are
all forms of collusion that are unethical and schemes that are associated with the construction
business. Bid rigging is the way that scheming competing contractors effectively increase the
prices where owners are often federal, state, or local governments. They acquire services by put
out competing bids; in which, competitors agree in before hand who will be submitting the
accepted bid on a contract that is being handed into the competitive bids. This is a scheme that a lot
of big name contractors would use to help each other out, but the owner is the one paying and
loosing out. Bid shopping when

Medieval Kings and Popes Essay
The Pope was the title give to the head of the church, to which he was changed with the religious
care taking of the clergy and other believers. For military aid and expansion, early popes looked
to medieval kings like Clovis of the Franks, but by the time of Charlemagne s coronation by Pope
Leo III, it became questionable whether the popeor the king was the higher authority. After the fall
of the Roman Empire, Europe was decentralized with the development of feudalism, and this
allowed the only unifying establishment, the Church, to become more powerful. Though the Pope
and medieval kings originally held separate roles, with the rise of feudalism the popes gained
greater political power despite challenges from kings and lay investiture.... Show more content on

During this time, feudalism developed. In the feudal system, weak kings granted lands to
greater lords in return for military aid. Greater lords in turn granted lands to lesser lords below
them. These nobles governed all people, including clergyman to whom they granted a fief of
land. When a clergyman, who were to pay their loyalty to the pope, became a vassal, or under
the charge of a lord who granted him land, it gave the nobles and kings power. But because the
papacy had the unified support of the larger peasant class and there were no strong kings to
challenge him, the pope gained greater secular power than the nobility in addition to religious
influence. Not only could he banish people from the Church through religious excommunication,
but he could establish secular decrees like the Peace and Truce of God, which limited the
appropriate locations and days for war. Secular powers such as these were previously reserved to
kings, and illustrate that the pope due to the weakening of kings in the feudal system, held greater
authority. Originally medieval popes and kings held separate roles: the pope was a religious
caretaker and the king was a secular head. Beginning with the baptism of Clovis of the Franks in
481 A.D., a mutual alliance grew between the two powers, and through

The Peloponnesian As A Noble Empire
Thucydides believes war teaches that although humans are able to strive to a high standard of
civilization conflict will bring human s downfall to chaos. Homer, however, depicts humanity as
often failing to reach their standards, but having empathy in the end. Athens introduces itself in
The History of the Peloponnesian as a noble empire. The Athenians state that We consider that we
are worthy of our power (HPW, 76) to argue that although Athens took power they have done
nothing wrong since they still consider justice in affairs with their subjects instead of using force
(HPW, 80). This impromptu speech of the Athenians in Sparta shows the values of the polis. This
was not a planned speech or even an embassy of the state yet they still spoke of justice,
consideration for the weak, and thoughtful decision making. These are the standards that Athens
held itself to before the war. Thucydides includes this speech to give a reference point for the
following events.
The values of culture, art, and philosophy are communicated through Pericles during the Funeral
Oration. Pericles praises Athens as a model to others and an education to Greece for its
democracy, speeches, equality, and individuality (Discussion, Sept 12). Although Thucydides
includes the speech to demonstrate Athens s superiority over the rest of the Hellenic world, he
juxtaposes it with the plague. During the plague the citizen desecrate the bodies of their loved
ones and No fear of god or law of man had

As citizens of the United States in this day and age, people are most likely all too accustomed with this typical rush promoted between important festivities. It s exclusively about generating maximum revenue for the large corporations as frantic shoppers attempt to assuage their stress through hour upon hour of incessant shopping; arising in our society today, an important question of whether or not this avaricious behavior communicates total loss of understanding as to what the true meaning of the season represents. Within our culture, it seems to be of much more convenience to attend a Christmas Eve sale at Macy s rather than the Christmas Eve vigil at a local church. Days such as BLACK Friday really do give a good characterization to the way we as a whole have become. Next, one is unable to enjoy the true spirit of the season the togetherness, the contentment, and the unadulterated joy when the only thing singed into our minds is the need to prepare for the next quickly approaching holiday. Before you can even begin to think of the forthcoming celebration, all consumer based retailers have their shelves stocked high with goods pertaining to seasons months in the future. Sears, Kmart and Home Depot were among the first wave of retailers to set up their holiday displays and merchandise during the last week of September ( Kmart, Sears, and Home Depot ). It seems that, at this point every year, Halloween and Thanksgiving are to be forgotten, shipped away to the land of misfit rationalizations; the biggest moneymaker of them all is the only thing that retail stores want you to remember. The mound building peoples of the Eastern United States (U.S.) along with the Aztec s, Mayan and the Inca were revolutionary economists, farmers and communal architects. Before the Europeans came in contact with the mound building tribes in the 1500 s, a thriving nation was had developed into an economic powerhouse and maintain its position of power and commerce for a few hundred years. We would be remiss to not preserve the archeological remnants of the Adena, Hopewellian and later the Mississippians. Each of the many built mounds holds unique facts and details to how the nation thrived and developed over several centuries. One of the most influential and progressive cultures in North American history was the mound building Native American tribes. The most significant aspects of the mound building peoples was the multitude of mounds built for burials, ceremonial and ritual events, temples and other important buildings, and effigy mounds in the shape of various animals (Colin Calloway, 2012, p. 32). When determining what method to use to compensate employees, a company must be aware of the impact that different compensation methods can have on employee performance, and on organizational culture. Unfortunately, there is no one size fits all answer to the question of employee compensation. Some employees will respond very well to a program that other employees might balk at. Another potential issue that prevents performance based compensation from being completely effective is the method of implementation. What performance an employee is being compensated for is just as important as (if not more important than) the fact the he is being compensated for performance. If an employee is being compensated for sales he makes, he may find himself cutting corners or ignoring rules to make sales that he ought not to make. Ho et al use Sears as an example of this phenomenon. In 1992, Sears ended a policy of performance based compensation that had failed miserably, because auto repair salespeople had performed $15 million dollars of unnecessary services for which Sears was ultimately forced to refund payment, or pay other settlement costs. The issue was that Sears was paying their salespeople based on the number of sales they made, thus giving them a motivation to perform unnecessary services, despite the fact that this would cause the company in incur long run costs. Thus, performance based pay is not necessarily a good thing, especially if it is linked to an aspect of performance that may not directly relate to overall company performance. One might try to learn a lesson from this example and determine that employees should ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

First of all, the introduction of Goods and Services Tax by Mulroney built the foundation for eliminating federal deficit, which occurs when the government spends more money than it makes (Parker 22). Deficit increased the selling off of the capital assets in Canada to finance the purchases of slowly diminishing goods and services, which undermined future production and raised unemployment rates and inflation (Swatsky 309). Not only did the introduction of GST overcame deficit by a significant amount, it also proved to be an important source of generating revenues, improving the competitive position of Canada s economy in the world and acting as an efficient way for managing the country (Good and Bad sides of GST). This could be justified though the fact that when Mulroney introduced the GST, the revenues grew by one third, and GDP by 1.2%. Although it was not enough to stop deficit at first, it did slow it down and eventually hauled it (Coyne). But at the same time, his attempt to stop deficit limited his ability to deliver the promises he made in terms of services and infrastructures.(Info base Learning). In contrast to the suspension of disbelief, Brecht never wanted the audience to fall into the performance. He wanted the audience to make judgments on the argument dealt in the play. When there are few props prepared, the play itself does not look realistic causing the audience to think about the situation. The performance seems realistic if minor props are also used during the play. However, Brecht did not want this. He wanted the audience to be constantly aware of the idea that they are watching a performance on stage. To prevent melodrama or emotion from overtaking the audience, comic songs and music are often incorporated to provide emotional details. This can be extremely disturbing to the audience unfamiliar to Theatre of Alienation yet it leads to cheerful, upbeat tunes with disturbing lyrics. Musicians, lighting mechanics and changing costumes are visible during the performance. However, this approach fits much better with a generic concept of culture, in the sense of a broad cultural community such as Arabs, Latins or Chinese, than with the constrained boundaries of a nation state, where individual and organizational diversity allows for a pluralistic coexistence of both low and high context. 9.The work of Kluckhohn and Strodtbeck (1961) offers another useful framework to understand cultural differences. Viewing culture as a set of assumptions and deep level values regarding relationships among humans and between humans and their environments, Kluckhohn and Strodtbeck proposed four basic value orientations, which can be further divided into sub dimensions to capture the complex cultural variations across societies. The major orientations in their model are human nature (evil, mixed, good), man nature relationship (subjugation, harmony, dominant), social relation with people (hierarchical, collateral, individual), human activity (being, becoming, doing), and time sense (past, present, future). • 23. The Myths And Rituals At Mycenaean And Minoan Sites Sir Arthur Evans in the twentieth century, helped to explain many existing questions about Homer s epics and provided archaeological evidence for many of the mythological details about gods and heroes. Unfortunately, the evidence about myths and rituals at Mycenaean and Minoan sites is entirely monumental, as the Linear B script was used mainly to record inventories, although certain names of gods and heroes have been tentatively identified. Secondly, visual sources sometimes represent myths or mythical scenes that are not attested in any extant literary source. In some cases, the first known representation of a myth in geometric art predates its first known representation in late archaic poetry, by several centuries. The earlier inhabitants of the Balkan Peninsula were an agricultural people who, using Animism, assigned a spirit to every aspect of nature. Eventually, these vague spirits assumed human forms and entered the local mythology as gods. When tribes from the north of the Balkan Peninsula invaded, they brought with them a new pantheon of gods, based on conquest, force, prowess in battle, and violent heroism. Other older gods of the agricultural world fused with those of the more powerful invaders or else faded into insignificance. After the middle of the Archaic period, myths about relationships between male gods and male heroes became more and more frequent, indicating the parallel development of pedagogic pederasty, thought to have been introduced around 630 BC. ... • 25. Effects Of A Solar Eclipse What is a solar eclipse? What effect might a solar eclipse have on one? A solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and the earth. This makes the sun align behind the moon as it blocks the sun s beautiful and gleaming rays. When the sun is behind the moon, it seems as if it is as dark as night and makes the sunlook like a ring of fire high in the sky. During a solar eclipse, many things can happen that one would be astonished by observing such as, the actual object, changes in the atmosphere, animals and people s behavior, and emotional and sensual feelings. The object that appeared in the sky had everyone s attention and concentration, not only that day, but weeks before. Everyone had been talking about the upcoming solar eclipse. Teachers planned lessons, and posters lined the walls to inform students of expectations and safety measures. A solar eclipse, an event appealing to the eye, is an unforgettable phenomenon that can leave someone with the experience of a lifetime. On the day of the eclipse, the view of the sun was oddly bright and dim. The sky was as bright as a sun rise early in a summer s morning. It was so bright I was tempted, yet scared to look at it. The whole Middleton High School separated to go outside and watch the eclipse in different areas. The location where we watched the eclipse only allowed us to see the moon partially blocking the sun. We all saw the sun slowly lose its rays as the moon raced to appear in front. Although the total ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

As empires rise and expand, it becomes necessary to create a legal code that standardizes punishment, institutes a form of common law, and protects society from arbitrary abuses of power. These principles were formally established relatively early in the western world, and became the foundations upon which later government institutions created their legal systems. The Code of Hammurabi, the Twelve Tables, and Magna Carta, all represent key moments in the evolution of legal thought and practice. Not only do they show the legal and political direction of the empires, but also the progression of their social values The Babylonian empire s success was due in large part to its powerful sixth king, Hammurabi who reigned from 1792 1750 B.C.E. At the age of twenty five he succeeded to the throne and devoted the first thirty years of his reign to wars of conquest. His military success meant that his empire now possessed a diverse population that was difficult to placate. To aid in unifying the empire and making punishments standard and universal, he issued the Code of Hammurabi. In three hundred clauses, Hammurabi established the rudiments of common law. By Christian Samson Harvey Milk was the first openly gay politician to be publically elected to office in California with his entry to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. It was in November 1978 that a fellow conservative politician who strongly opposed Milk s views on anti discrimination and gay rights assassinated Milk whilst he sat in his office. Milk had only been in office for 11 months and his death sent shockwaves through the community. Milk s message as a public figure during the 1970s around greater rights and freedoms for gay people was powerful and arguably, in many ways, remains relevant today. Pearson (2005) maintains that Milk was pivotal in the gay rights movement and that gay rights are still an issue in the United States and many other places around the world. Two texts that perhaps best captured Milk s messages and the powerful ways through which he communicated them are an interview from the free gay San Francisco Kalendar magazine from 1973, and You ve Got to have Hope, or The Hope Speech , a public address from Milk intended to embolden a strong GLBTQ nationalism within the Castro, while also appealing for an alliance with other disenfranchised groups and straight folk (Milk et al. 2013 p.147). An example is hydrolysis that occurs in glucose. Without enzymes glucose will still hydrolyze, but at a slow rate. With the right enzyme hydrolysis will occur even more rapidly than before. Enzymes work by having a substrates enter their active site. Induce fit (the substrates forms weak bonds with the enzymecausing the enzymes shape to enfold the substrate) than occurs to the enzyme. It must be kept in mind however, that the enzymes only work on specific substrates and not all of them also known as enzyme specificity. There are many factors that may affect enzyme reaction rates. The pH and temperatureof the environment that the enzyme is in may denature the enzyme if it is not in the optimal area for the specific enzyme. If the pH and temperature of the environment is in the optimal area than the enzyme will work at its best if not than reaction rates may slow down. Behind them, a household slave stands ready to serve and a vast landscape sprawls outside the window. Though the painting appears to be a simple, familyportrait, it actually contains deeper, political messages. It was well known that Washington intended to step out of the public sphere following the war before being elected, and that he continued to long for a quiet life at home throughout his presidency. In this work, Savage depicts Washington filling roles of general, statesman and patriarch, making the statement that he can fulfil all three roles. • 46. Medieval Kings and Popes Essay The Pope was the title give to the head of the church, to which he was changed with the religious care taking of the clergy and other believers. For military aid and expansion, early popes looked to medieval kings like Clovis of the Franks, but by the time of Charlemagne s coronation by Pope Leo III, it became questionable whether the popeor the king was the higher authority. This impromptu speech of the Athenians in Sparta shows the values of the polis. This was not a planned speech or even an embassy of the state yet they still spoke of justice, consideration for the weak, and thoughtful decision making. Pericles praises Athens as a model to others and an education to Greece for its democracy, speeches, equality, and individuality (Discussion, Sept 12).
