Availability zone (AZ)
● Collection of 1 or more data center inside a region.
● Ex: US-EAST-1a,US-EAST-1b
● 1 or more AZ can be there inside a region.
● AZ’s are connected via high speed fiber network
● AZ has redundant power backup & network.
● If One AZ fails, other is designed to continue
operating.
Region
● Physically independent location in the world.
● Ex: US-EAST-1.
● Region has independent network and power
backups.
● If one region fails, other region will continue
to operate.

Edge Locations
● They cache content and deliver
content to users close to Edge
Locations.
● Speeds up content delivery.
● Example netflix movies.
Govt locations
● Data center dedicated to use of
Government services.
● Cannot be used by public.

7. AWS TIPS
How to choose a region
● Compliance & Legal requirements: Compliance of data has to be taken care. Some compliances dictate that data of
users of a country must be only present inside the country. Another example is GDPR.
● Proximity: User proximity is another factor for choosing the region. If users are from US, better host the application
in US.
● SLA. AWS Service Level Agreements varies across regions. If your company requires a particular SLA to be met, then
region can be chosen based on it.
● Cost: Cost of AWS services vary across regions. The way Brazil’s tax structure is set up, it might cost 50% more to
run the same workload out of the São Paulo
● Services: Some services are not available in all regions.

4 hr 23 minutes in a Year.

tolerance.
