Open sharing, Global Benefits

Editor's Notes

  • #2 Hi, my name is Steve Carson. I’m External Relations Director for MIT OpenCourseWare and privileged to currently be serving as the first president of the OpenCourseWare Consortium.
  • #3 I’d like to share a little of the history of OCW—what it is, how it came about, what it means for the people who use it and the universities that produce it.
  • #4 Before I do though, I’d like to take a quick detour and talk about what a university is first—or rather one way of thinking about what a university provides, which will be helpful in understanding OCW. For as long as they’ve been around, universities have provided three things to their students…
  • #5 …content (that is, the materials to be studied)…
  • #6 …learning experiences crafted around that content…
  • #7 …and assessment and certification of that learning. It’s a formula that’s worked pretty well.
  • #8 But universities, like many other organizations lately, have confronted a disruptive innovation that challenges that model:
  • #9 The internet. Now disruptive influences are not necessarily good or bad, but they do create inflection points at which existing models need to be re-examined in light of new circumstances. Around the year 2000, many universities found themselves asking the same question:
  • #10 What does the internet mean for our institution?
  • #11 Many universities answered this question by taking the existing campus-based formula—content, learning experience and certification—and moving it online, creating online universities. And number have been quite successful at doing so.
  • #12 Online learning has reached wider audiences…
  • #13 …and helped to address the growing need for certification
  • #14 When MIT confronted this question of what the internet meant, however, we recognized that we weren’t particularly well positioned to address the need for certification online. We are a small school —10,000 students and about 1,000 faculty—and we are fortunate to teach very high performing students in some of the best campus facilities in the world. This was not going to translate easily or inexpensively to the online environment.
  • #15 And while providing certification to a wider audience was a fine goal…
  • #16 …MIT saw an opportunity to serve a truly global audience.
  • #17 An audience that didn’t necessarily need certification.
  • #18 But rather an audience who could benefit from access to educational content alone...
  • #19 But lacked that access. And for this audience it wasn’t necessary to convert the material to a fully online educational experience.
  • #20 The internet could provide millions around the world access to the same content that MIT students received in their classrooms. Materials that could be used to improve educational systems, solve professional problems, and support individual learning. And that, in a nutshell, is the idea behind OCW.
  • #21 OCW is the content…
  • #22 …without the interaction with students or faculty…
  • #23 …without the interaction with students or faculty…
  • #24 ..distributed at no cost to the user on the internet.
  • #25 OpenCourseWare.
  • #26 It’s a powerful idea, and idea that has resonated throughout the global educational community.
  • #35 Great, but what do we mean by OCW “content” really? What is it?
  • #53 The Consortium does not prescribe any particular license, but some of the more familiar open licenses include the Creative Commons licenses, GNU GPL, and the OPL. These open licenses, by the way are how I am able to use all of these great photos. Each of the photographers has granted an open license for their use so I did not have to track down their permission.
