Editor's Notes
Introduce team. 45-min presentation shared between AJHS & ASHS. Q & A at end.
Please can I see a show of hands if you are definitely coming to AJHS next year? Unsure? Not coming?
We are a student centred school. Although I must talk for far too long, you will hear students telling you about the schools. I would like to start by inviting Elliot (Y7) to tell you about his experiences of our school.
AFTER: The purpose of tonight is to describe the wonderful future of your child if they follow the Albany system learning pathway.
There are no bad schools on the North Shore although there are some better than the rest.
Congratulations on choosing Albany which is one of the best.
But what next? AJHS is different to every other school on the Shore. Firstly, I would like to list some of the many reasons why we are the right choice for your child and then go into the detail behind these points.
Year 7 -10 (not 13 looking at 18 yr. old experimentation)
School within a school: Whanau system - 4 years, community of 300
4 year emotional investment by teachers & staff. Intermediates cannot do this.
Whanau time every day – pastoral and academic tutoring
No negative effects of school transition (Effect size of -0.34)
Investment in pastoral care – WL, AWL, WTs, Counselors, youth workers, etc.

By the way, our donations are $550 per year plus camps but that is with no other surprises.
My son goes elsewhere and the donation is around $200 but then activity fees, ICAS, bus fares etc. are costing us around $70 per month for a total of $900.
Colleges charge much more than us for the same level of facilities.
Element days come from Sir Ken Robinson’s appeal in his book, The Element, for students to be allowed to explore their creativity or other talents in addition to the core subjects, instead of the hierarchy of subjects we are used to from our school days.
