Editor's Notes

  1. Thank you so much Danielle!!! Are you excited? We can all agree on the reasons that we would want to become involved in this “new way” of communicating, training and recruiting volunteers. And add in fundraising??
  2. So are we ready to enter the www I mean the ….wonderful world of what do we do now????
  3. Today we are going to have a short course in how to get started.1.We are going to work through setting up a Facebook Page2. We will check into LinkedIn3. Look at how to tweet on Twitter4. See how save a bookmarks in DeliciousJust think, you will be able to keep in contact with your friends and family at home and keep the lines of communication open to your volunteers in a few easy steps
  4. The first thing we will talk about is how to set up a Facebook pageHere we can attract and engage volunteersDo Fundraising for our causeCreate discussions about issues important to our organizationPublicize upcoming events (and report on them afterward)Just think, you will be able to keep in contact with your friends and family at home and keep the lines of communication open to your volunteers in a few easy steps.
  5. We start by going to www.facebook.comWe are going to spend more time on Facebook because I think you will see that it is a pretty extensive site to use. It encompasses different types of pages and ways to get your information out. Here is the opening pageBelow the line is where you would go to start a page for your organization.By clicking on this link, we are taken to the correct place to begin for an organization to register
  6. Here is what the registration page looks like..Fill in the blanksPlease note the legal language at the bottomYou must certify that you are authorized to represent this group and sign with an electronic signature. Click on Create page
  7. Next you will need to sign in or create an account.
  8. This is what page looks like at first. Now you can add pictures, text and anything else you want to use. We need to add other bits of information and designate how we want our “fans” to be able to interact with our Page. Click on Edit Information
  9. These are the various options that you can add to your Page. Next we want to start a Causes page. Go up to the search box and type in Causes. You will end up on a page similar to this one.
  10. These are Causes that I support and the recent activity in them. Why do we want to start a Cause Page? This is specifically for organizations. A Cause can have fundraising as part of their page. A Donate Button will be located on the Page. Members and others who read your page can Donate toward the Cause. You can feature a certain event as a specific fundraiser. Remember this is all free of charge. Yes, it takes some time to set this up but once it’s done. Communication with Volunteers is quick. Today’s Volunteers are very techno –savy so this appeals to them.At the top of this page is a place to Start a Cause. When we click on this link ….
  11. Again it is fill in the blanksNote again you must certify that you are authorized to represent your organization as a Cause.
  12. Here is an example of a Cause from the Arkansas Children’s Hospital. They have 5,364, 906 members and have raised $52, 295.00
  13. The American Red Cross is a Cause with 37,311 members and they have raised $5,482 on here. I am sorry but I don’t know the time frame on that number. Note that they a 501 ©(3) registered nonprofit
  14. Causes HelpThis describes what steps you need to take to be able to accept donations right here on Facebook. The HELP section is very useful and you will need to go there to check out how to register with www.guidestar.org to register for your donations.Or you can include a direct link to your website home page in the description or media board of your cause and encourage people to contribute directly.
  15. Let’s say we want to publicize an upcoming event… By going to the Event section we can add the information we want Here is how you create an event
  16. Pictures can be uploaded or use your organization logo
  17. Here is the Event page I created for today’s RAAVS Conference. Once the event is created, you can send invitations to other Facebook members or to emails of people not on Facebook at all. The main page gives an ongoing total of who is attending and who has not replied as yet. This is a good place to post updates and reminders too.Keep your discussion moving but don’t overwhelm your “fans” with too many updates
  18. To show you what happens when items are posted to your Page or Cause Page ….Here is the new feed on my personal page. Because I am a fan of RAAVS I see the updates. Can you see how this can be used to communicate with Volunteers or talk about a fundraiser that is happening?
  19. This is my personal profile page. The tabs at the top give the various types of information you can add.
  20. Here is where the Groups and Pages show up on my profile. This is under the INFO tabHere at the bottom is a link to the Causes that I support.
  21. We have covered Pages, Causes and Events. One more area that we can use effectively on Facebook is the Category called Groups. Groups can be started by anyone for almost any reason. Groups could be useful to create a discussion of a particular topic of concern n your organization. You might have a group who are part of a fund raiser and want to correspond with each other through the Wall here.
  22. Here are some ideas of some GroupsA Group is simply a number of persons who share an idea or want to exchange information. For instance, you could start a group Supporters of Every Friday Off
  23. Now lets talk about Linked inAllows users to maintain a contact list of details of professionals they know and trust in business. Jobs are posted on the site as well as suggestions for contacts
  24. This list of connections can then be used in a number of ways:To gain an introduction to someone you wish to know through a mutual, trusted contact. Maybe you need to connect with someone in a Retail Office for sponsorship. If they have a profile on LinkedIn you can do some background research for mutual interest in your programs.2. Questions are answered by other professionals
  25. Here is where you sign up.
  26. Here is one of the contacts you may want to add to your network. Are there any other ways you can think of that you could use this type of a network?Finding volunteers in a certain industry?
  27. You can browse through groups to find people with interests that link to your Organization. Do you think that this would help you?
  28. Here is where you have an opportunity to ask questions and you can browse other questions for pertinent information
  29. Instant communicationEnables its users to send and read other users' updates known as tweetsTweets can be sent and received on your computer or on a cell phone
  30. Here is the sign up page of twitter
  31. My TweetsYou type right in the box and then hit update. Your tweet is on its way to your followers. As you can see there is one for a retail online storeThe next one is from Compeer telling about an online blog with the link to it
  32. How we can use twitter ….Twitter can be useful to get quick news out and to keep your volunteers connected. Use discretion – too many Tweets may make your audience tune out
  33. Twitter collects personally identifiable information about it’s users and shares this with 3rd parties.Recently, a worm propagated through a link that was posted in a tweet. The old warning for the Internet is important still:DO NOT CLICK on a link unless you are sure of the source
  34. This is a handy site where you can save your favorite bookmarks online to keep them organized, makes them portable and allows access from any computer. You can easily share them with others as well.
  35. Sign up here
  36. Home page on delicious.comHere you can browse popular bookmarks or Explore TagsClick on the word save for any you want to add to your personal list
  37. Here is my home page on delicious.com Tags are on the side where the bookmarks are organized.
  38. These little icons are then added to your browser command Toolbar. By clicking on the TAG icon, you can add this page to your delicious bookmarks .
  39. This is the screen that opens and the URL and the Title will already be filled in. You can add any notes you may want. Then add the Tags to sort. A drop down box will appear when you begin typing to make it even easier to file this in the appropriate category. If you are like me this is very helpful as I sometimes forget what Tag Names I have used!!
