RAJAB THE SACRED ISLAMIC MONTH
1. Bismil-Laahir-Rahmaa Nir- Raheem
The Sacred Month of Rajab
MUBAARAK
The entire world is the creation of Allaah, however, some places are
considered more sacred and divine than others. For instance, prayers
offered at Makaah and Madinah carry more value and significance than
those offered at an ordinary place. This is because some places are
more close and sacred because of their origins or their history.
2. Similarly, some months carry more value and significance than other
months. For example, Rajab is considered more sacred.
Rajab is the 7th month of the Islamic calendar and is one of the four
sacred months, the other three being Zill Qa’dah, Zill -Hajj, and
Muharram.
When Allaah Al Kareem created the world He made time into 12
months and selected four of them as sacred, i.e. months which were to
be treated with great reverence, and one in which sin is to be avoided
more than ever and its benefits to be reaped through superogatory
worship.. Rajab is distinct in that it is the sacred month that stands
alone whereas the other three fall in succession.
Allaah Kareem has given a special status to certain days, months,
places, and people. The Prophets of God are the most honored among
mankind; Makaah is the holiest of all cities; Ramadaan is the best
month; and the Night of Power (Laiela tul Qadr) is the greatest night of
the year.
Allaah Almighty says in the Holy Qur’aan:
“Indeed, the number of months with Allaah is twelve [lunar] months
in the register of Allaah [from] the day He created the heavens and the
earth; of these, four are sacred […]”
(Qur’aan, 9:36)
3. These four sacred months were mentioned by the Prophet ﷺ (peace be
upon him) during his farewell pilgrimage:
“O People! Time has gone back to how it was at the time Allaah
created the Heavens and the Earth. A year has twelve months, four of
which are sacred, three consecutive, Dhul-Qi’dah, Zill Hajj, Muharram,
and Rajab.”
(Bukhari Shareef)
As we look through the Qur’aan and Sunnah (Prophetic tradition), we
are taught to respect and honor what God and His Prophet ﷺ have
honored. These sacred months are a time for us to reflect on our lives,
exert ourselves in extra worship and ask Allaah Almighty for His
forgiveness.
4. Specifically, Allaah Kareem reminds us to guard our actions during the
sacred months:
“O you who have believed, do not violate the rites of Allaah or
[the sanctity of] the sacred month […]” (Qur’aan, 5:2)
He [Allaah Almighty] reminds us not once but twice to be careful of
what we do during a sacred month:
“[…] so do not wrong yourselves during them (i.e., the sacred months)
[…]” (Qur’aan, 9:36)
5. Allaah Almighty states in the Holy Quraan

“Indeed the number of months before Allaah [Ta'aalaa] is twelve – in
the Book of Allaah – since the day He created the heavens and the
earth, of which four are sacred; this is the straight religion; so do not
wrong yourselves in those months.”
(Chapter 10, Soorah Taubaah, Verse 36)
These three verses show us the importance of being a conscientious
believer. The only way we can make sure we do not wrong ourselves
during the sacred months is to be conscious of our actions. Time and
time again we forget or are lax in our duties to God. Allaah Almighty has
given us these sacred months to turn back to Him and to take account
of ourselves.
The month of Rajab comes at an important time of the year for us. The
coming of this month means that we are close to yet another
Ramadaan, God Willing. The intention to mentally and physically
prepare for Ramadan.
6. The lexical definition of Rajaba is "to respect", of which Rajab is a
derivative. In this month battles are prohibited. The pre-Islaamic Arabs
also considered warfare sacrilegious during the four months.
It’s Arabic roots are “Ra” which stands for the “Rahmat” or Mercy of
Allaah Almighty; “Jeem” which stands for “Jood” which is the
Generosity of Allaah Almighty; and “Ba” which stands for “Bir” which is
the Goodness of Allaah Almighty.
The sacred month of Rajab is therefore filled from beginning till end
with benefits for the believer from his or her Lord: Mercy without
punishment, Generosity without restraint, and Goodness without harm.
Hazrat Abdul Qadir [Rahmatul Laah Alaieh] mentions in his Ghunya that
Rajab is the month for forsaking sins, Sha’baan is the month for action
and fulfillment of one’s oath, and Ramadaan is for truth and
purification.
He furthermore writes that Rajab is the month for repentance,
Sha’baan is the month for hard work, and Ramadaan is the month to
gain nearness. Furthermore he writes that Rajab is for sanctity
(hurmat), Sha’baan is for service (khidmat), and Ramadaan is for
blessings (Ni’mat).
Rajab and Sha'ban are a prelude to the month of Ramadaan.
Rajab is a great month as is evident from the following Hadees of the
Holy Prophet ﷺ
“Sha’baan is my month, Rajab is the month of Allaah Almighty,
and Ramadaan is the month of my Community.
Sha’baan is the expiator, while Ramadaan is purifier.”
7. The most beautiful event of this Holy month is the the blessed journey
of Mai'raaj [The Night Ascension] which was held on the night of 27th
Rajab.
The night in which the beloved holy Prophet (Peace be upon him]
ascended to the heavens and beyond to meet his Rabb [Lord].
It is a miracle that was not granted to anyone else before nor will it be
granted to anyone in the future.
The Holy Prophet ﷺ used to pray
“O’ Allaah! Bless us abundantly in Rajab and Sha’baan and deliver us
safely unto Ramadaan.”

FASTING IN THE MONTH OF RAJAB
Fasting is one of the most recommended acts during this spiritual
season. It becomes Wajib during the month of Ramadaan, but is highly
recommended during the months of Rajab and Sha’baan. As will be
noted from the Hadees above and others to follow, fasting, be it for
only one day during these months, is rewarded with untold bounties.
Hazrat Salmaan Farsi [Radiyal Laahu Anhu] narrates that the Holy
Prophet [Peace be upon him] said that there is a day in the month of
Rajab on which if a person fasts and does Qiyaamul Lail (night vigil ) on
that night, he will receive rewards like a person who fasts for 100 years
and does Qiyaamul Lail for nights of 100 years. This night is the night of
the 27th (Rajab) and the day of the 27th (Rajab).
The Night of Mairaaj Un Nabee.
"Rajab is (the name of) a River in paradise that is whiter than milk &
sweeter than honey. Allaah Almighty will allow one to drink from this
9. river if he fasts for even one day in this month. It is also a month of
seeking forgiveness more than usual as Allaah is forgiving & merciful
during this month.
How can we honor the month of Rajab and use it as a preparation for
Ramadaan?
Reflect on your Life and Deeds. Take some alone time and ask yourself
the hard questions we normally don’t like to think about: If I died today,
where would I stand with Almighty Allaah? Have I prepared for
Ramadaan?
Have I been conscious of what I am saying and doing to those around
me? Am I stagnant in my worship?
Deprive your Nafs (lower self). I was with my brother one day and I
mentioned that I was hungry and wanted to get something to eat.
He told me: “Teach your nafs a lesson. We shouldn’t always give it what
it wants.”
This does not mean that we starve ourselves or do not take care of our
bodies. One of the goals of Ramadaan is to increase in our God-
consciousness by not indulging ourselves with what our soul desires.
Eat a simple meal for a few days instead of an expensive or huge meal.
Wake up early and go for a walk. Pray extra prayers. Go to the mosque
for fajr if you normally do not do so. Exert yourself and do something to
“teach your nafs a lesson.”
10. Fasting. There is no better way to prepare for Ramadaan than to fast
some extra days.
Hazrat A’ishaah (—may God be pleased with her) was known to fast
during the summer, and when the scholars would mention her habit,
they would add:
“If the price is cheap, then everyone will buy it.” Ibn Rajab explained:
“She wanted to do those actions that only a few were capable of due to
how hard it was to do them, and this is indicative of the high aspirations
she had.”
While we can’t get out of having Ramadan in the summer, we can
follow her and be of the few that do something valuable before we are
all obligated to fast. Now is the time to not only prepare for fasting but
to gain some reward as the temperature rises.
Remember the Hereafter.
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Hell complained to its Lord saying: O Lord! My
parts are eating (destroying) one another. So Allaah Almighty allowed it
to take two breaths, one in the winter and the other in the summer.
The breath in the summer is at the time when you feel the severest
heat and the breath in the winter is at the time when you feel the
severest cold.” (Bukhaari)
Charity. Most of us do some act of charity every day without realizing it.
In this sacred month, be charitable with the intention of pleasing God.
Being courteous, helping someone, feeding another, saying a good
word, sharing a reminder and even abstaining from doing a bad deed
11. are all non-monetary forms of charity taught to us by our Beloved
Prophet.
Supplicate (make du`a’) to Allaah Kareem. Ask for His forgiveness and
guidance. Ask HIM to bless us to reach Ramadaan and to make the
month of Rajab, and the following month of Sha’baan, a means for us
to prepare for Ramadan.
Take Care of Your Tree. Hazrat Ibn Rajab used to say:
“The year is like a tree. The days of Rajab are its foliation. The days of
Sha’baan are its branching and the days of Ramadaan are wherein its
fruits are reaped. The reapers are the believers. It is befitting for the
one who has blackened his pages with sins to whiten them with
repentance in this month, and for the one who has squandered his life
in idleness to profit in it from what remains of his life.”
.
For all those who cannot fast during the month, they can give charity or
bread to the needy for every day of the month.
The month of Rajab is a sacred month and one should avail the
opportunity to reap as many benefits as possible. Worshipping Allaah
Almighty during the month can help you gain tremendous rewards and
these rewards can be gained by simply reciting the Holy Quraan.
Sometimes, people also learn Quraan during the month of Rajab to add
more good deeds in their deed book. It is a month during which Allaah
Almighty promises to listen to the prayers of his beings, forgive the
sinners and reward those who managed to repent on their sins. During
12. this month, Allaah also does not reject any plea. Therefore, being a
Muslim, make sure you use this month to add more good deeds to your
deed book.
