What is &quot;Open Access&quot; <ul><li>According to&quot;Budapest Open Access Initiative&quot; (BOAI) </li></ul><ul><ul><li>It’s free availability on the public internet, permitting any users to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of these articles, crawl them for indexing, pass them as data to software, or use them for any other lawful purpose, without financial, legal, or technical barriers other than those inseparable from gaining access to the internet itself. The only constraint on reproduction and distribution, and the only role for copyright in this domain, should be to give authors control over the integrity of their work and the right to be properly acknowledged and cited </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>(http: //www.soros.org/openaccess/read.shtml). </li></ul></ul>
  • 3. <ul><li>BOAI recommend two complementary strategies for authors to participate in open access these are: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Open Access Journals (Golden Road) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Self-Archiving of E-Prints (Green Road) </li></ul></ul>

  • 12. Self-Archiving of E-Prints <ul><li>&quot;Self-archiving&quot; refers to making &quot;e-prints&quot; available on the Web. An e-print is either a digital preprint or a postprint. </li></ul>

E-prints are typically made available in one of four primary ways: <ul><li>author's personal website; </li></ul><ul><li>a disciplinary archive that includes works by authors worldwide about one or more subjects; </li></ul><ul><li>an institutional e-print archive that includes e-prints by authors in a single academic unit, such as a department , or the entire institution; or </li></ul><ul><li>an institutional repository that includes diverse types of digital works (e.g., data sets, electronic theses and dissertations, presentations, and technical reports), including e-prints, by authors at a single institution. </li></ul>
