- Have and van der Toorn (2012, p.72) “
In the last decennia, hand drawing has been slowly moved out of the curricula in
architecture schools and the teaching of computer skills has taken over.”
3. 02 | STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
The pureness or quality of artworks
In terms of human cognition, sketches promote the dialectical process between a sufficiently
specified and coherent physical form and abstract, conceptual, propositional knowledge.
Design industry demands hand drawing skills
(Goldschmidr, 1991, 1994).
According to Tang and Gero (2010, p.1), conceptual design is perhaps the most crucial phase
in the design development cycle. During this phase, designers set up the direction for the
following design process, incubate creativity, and embody most of the values into design
The efficiency in designing – conceptualizing and visual thinking
artifacts.
Have and van der Toorn (2012, p.72) stated that computer can do a lot but not everything.
Also efficiency has become more important, sometimes you can do things with a computer
but it takes more time and way more investments in software and hardware.
4. 03 | OPERATIONAL DEFINITION
HAND DRAWING
Dee (2008) drawing is used as generic term that comprises sketching, mapping, diagramming, making cross-sections,
SKETCHES
touching up drawings, drawing from life, doodling, technical drawing and other similar activities.
Suwa et. Al. (1998) stated that sketches are representations of the results of thinking process, decreasing the
cognitive load of designers, and they also involved in provoking creativity during designing.
COMPUTER – AIDED CONCEPTUAL DESIGN
Computer has emerged as an ideation tool across design domains. Hence, computer-aided defines as a
medium or technology tools that important in the conceptual design process.
5. 04 | RESEARCH OBJECTIVES
To identify the level of students interest in computer software for their design
works progress.
To identify the level of students interest in hand drawing for their design
works progress.
To determine whether students interested in computer software or hand
drawing for their design works.
To investigate the importance between computer software and hand drawing
for real industry needs.
6. 05 | RESEARCH QUESTION
What is the level of student’s interest in computer software?
What is the level of student’s interest in hand drawing?
Is there any difference in students preference between computer software
and hand drawing?
What are the importance between computer software and hand drawing for
real industry needs.

8. 07 | RESEARCH DESIGN
APPROACH
QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH
METHODS
EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH
Probably prepare an experiment or test based on student’s
productiveness & efficiency, quality of work and time management
using different tools which are computer aided and hand drawing.
or
CORRELATIONAL RESEARCH
Refer objectives no. 4
9. 08 | SAMPLING
RANDOM SAMPLING
STRATIFIED SAMPLING
To identify the level between two groups (computer aided or hand drawing).
The highest score with the same percentage of student’s quantity
probably the most preferences tools.
or
TWO STAGES RANDOM SAMPLING
Cluster Random Sampling + Simple Random Sampling
Probably to identify the preference between two tools by individual.
10. 09 | INSTRUMENTS
TEST
OBSERVATION SCHEME
QUESTIONNAIRE
INTERVIEW
Student will have an experiment through test or examination
regarding any design artworks
The researcher will observe the design process in terms of productivity of students
And perhaps with simple questionnaire for every single of them to identify their own
view of interest.
The test or examination will be revise by experts (their lecturer) and the
score will identify statistically to find out the highest score by using what kind of tools
Then, the proper interview with their lecturer or even with expert in design industry
Which to gain information about their perception about this
stereotype and also regarding with industrial needs and demands.
