Basketball is a team sport played by two teams of five players on a court. The objective is to shoot a ball through a hoop. Dr. James Naismith invented basketball in 1891 while working at the YMCA Training School in Massachusetts, using two peach baskets as the first goals. Basketball was introduced to the Philippines in the late 1800s by the YMCA and has since become very popular, with the Philippines winning numerous medals at the Asian Games and Southeast Asian Games since the 1950s.
