Founded in 1963, it is now in need of community support to continue providing a quality education. Once upon a time, a young boy named Harishchandra, ran away from his village,Chikli and came to Pune. 11 years old and with no money in his pocket, he fought to pursue his way through education, finally graduating from Wadia college. Although just 20 years old, he realized that he was lucky to have gotten out of poverty, unlike the thousands of children who never had a chance to get ahead.----- Meeting Notes (21/08/2013 00:29) -----only 11 yrs old and with no money in his pocket, he would have easily ended up as one of the many disheartening stories that we see on the news each day. Instead, he fought
And so he went door to door asking people to help him start an institute to help educate the masses who badly yearned it but couldn’t afford it.
When his hut wasn’t big enough to teach the hundreds that came to him, he moved under a tree until he was spotted by SantGadgeMaharaj, who helped him procure a place. That is how SantGadgeMaharajvidhayala was born.
After being officially founded in 1963, the school has come a long way in keeping Harishchandra’s dream alive. However, while the secondary school is recognized by the government (and thus funded by the zillaparishad), the primary is still not. Due to this, the only funding the primary school receives are from individuals who believe in helping those less privileged in society….This is the topic of our presentation today.
So lets talk about Santgadgemaharaj and the slum community neighboring it
Currently we offer classes till grade 4, with a hundred plus children in attendance. Since there is no fees charged to the students, we want to raise funds to be able to provide basic school amenities to these children.
So what do we need from you to achieve this. Any financial help to help support the school is welcome. It can be in the form of a monthly assistance that can help provide for the teachers, staff members and daily stationary. It can also be in terms of a one time support to help procure teaching aids like chalkboards or reference books or new uniforms for the children,
who are desperately in need of it
Once we manage to get the teachers and student materials organized for this coming year, we want to eventually be able to provide a mid-day meal, free of cost, to help ease the stress of expenditure further for these families. We also want to make the nursery partially a Montessori, thusmaking the learning fun and encouraging these kids to leave the slums and come to school. We also want to hone their interests in sports and give them a space to develop and inculcate hobbies. However we currently only have a playground to offer to these children…
Which would have been fine had it not been in the state it is in. (pause)Not only is it perpetually unkempt and breeding ground for mosquitoes, this isnt even a photo taken on a rainy day! In addition to being the gathering place of all SGMV’s children…(nxt slide)
it also serves as an assembly hall for daily morning assemblies…(nxt slide)
. and as the occasional classroom.
Needless to say, we want to develop the playground are so that it can truly be utilized by the children and the slum community next to it. Moreover, we would like to get sports equipment for the students to encourage sports activity.
These children are unlike many slum children who fall into the rut created by poverty and don’t end up getting out of it till they die, while the cycle continues. These children are eager to learn and love the school. They are willing to contribute in any way they can to help the school out.
Be it something as menial as doing the jhaadoo- pota of the school property. So, we should definitely help out this community, which is trying so hard to break the socio-economic bonds that is holding it back.
That brings us to the last part of our presentation and the most important. The slum community, neighboring the school, is in serious need of development and unlike most Indian slums that tend to slink back into poverty, this one is determined to get out and stay out. We want to encourage this thought and help them achieve this in any way we can.
So how can we help? By simply creating a foundation that helps them grow. For example, we currently have 20 computers donated to the school by TCS. We want to offer computer training classes to all the women and children in the slum areas along with our school children. We want to start a literacy program for the women in this neighborhood. By teaching them to read and write and have basic communication skills in English, these women can get a better paying job than menial work and truly help support the family. We want to provide employment opportunities to these people and help them create small businesses. Just by providing them with some earning skills, we are one step closer to converting them into product able and self sustaining members of society. Similarly, a vocational centre and the youth counseling program are another step in this direction; by giving the members of the community and children a platform to share their feelings and be heard- a place to help deal with the tough times, that fall on them all too often. We can create a change one step at a time here and we should miss out on the opportunity to do so.----- Meeting Notes (21/08/2013 00:29) ----- By creating a foundation that helps them grow
