1. Textual Analysis of Catch me if you can (opening sequence)

Catch me if you can is different from other title sequences as it’s a
graphic title sequence. This is good as it’s an illustration of how a
film- maker can suggest things about a character and narrative as
well as establish a sense of place in an opening.
This title sequence has a very large number of titles integrated into
the graphics this could be because the titles match the images on
the screen e.g. when the title Leonardo Decaprio came up it had
an image of small man in cartoon which represents Leonardo
Decaprio.
By watching the title sequence we can tell that the genre of the film
is a spy action thriller because of the graphics shown such as the
man in the suit that was sneaky and kept hiding.
The first thing we see is a title saying inspired by a true story this
just makes us look at the movie in a whole different way as its
based on real life events which makes it a whole lot more exiting.
We see a graphical image of a man that keeps running, changing
and hiding this could be related to the title as he could be running
from someone which brings in the title ‘Catch me if you can’. It
could also be giving us a clue of what the film is about and maybe
keep us curious to wanting to know what hes running and hiding
from.
The setting of the title sequence looks very intriguing and looks as
if its in America because of the urban landscapes and the yellow
taxis which gives us a clue to where the film is set.
By looking at this title sequence I can see that the themes
represented in this title sequence are identity because of all the
changing of clothes which could mean that the man is un-shore of
his identity, has not yet figured out his identity or even trying to
hide his identity.
The sounds or the backing track played in the title sequence is
Jazz. This could again be a clue to the time period the film is set in
as this type of jazz is from the 1950’s which could mean that its set
in the 1950’s. The music also shows represents sneakiness as this
is usually played when someone is trying to hide or in a typical spy
scene.
The title of the film ‘Catch me if you can’ is shown quite early in the
title sequence which could tell us that the following opening is
related to the title, or not to waste time and to get straight in to it, to

2. get us ready and familiar with the themes presented in the film. Or
so that its connected to the film itself and theres no title causing a
barrier as if the opening is part of story.
