3. • Leaders do not command excellence, they
build excellence. To reach excellence, you
must first be a leader of good character. Traits
are distinguishing qualities or characteristics
of a person and character is the sum total of
these traits.
• There are innumerable leadership traits. Let us
focus on a few that are crucial for a leader.
The more you display these traits as a leader,
the more your followers will believe and trust
you.
4. Vision and Integrity
• Vision: A leader with vision has a clear, vivid
picture of where to go, as well as a firm grasp on
what success looks like and how to achieve it. But
it’s not enough to have a vision; leaders must also
share it and act upon it.
• Integrity: is the integration of outward actions
and inner values. A person of integrity is the
same on the outside and on the inside. Such an
individual can be trusted. Honest dealings,
predictable reactions, well-controlled emotions,
and an absence of tantrums and harsh outbursts
are all signs of integrity.
5. Dedication and Magnanimity
• Dedication: means spending whatever time or
energy is necessary to accomplish the task at
hand. A leader inspires dedication by example,
doing whatever it takes to complete the next
step toward the vision.
• Magnanimity: means giving credit where it is
due. A magnanimous leader ensures that credit
for successes is spread as widely as possible
throughout the company. Conversely, a good
leader takes personal responsibility for failures.
To spread the fame and take the blame is a
hallmark of effective leadership.
6. Humility and Openness
• Humility: Leaders recognize that they are no
better or worse than other members of the team.
Leaders with humility understand that they earn
the respect from their team not through
authority but through personality and character.
• Openness: means being able to listen to new
ideas. Good leaders are able to suspend
judgment while listening to others’ ideas, as well
as accept new ways of doing things that someone
else thought of.
7. Creativity and Fairness
• Creativity: is the ability to think differently.
Creativity gives leaders the ability to see things
that others have not seen and thus lead followers
in new directions.
• Fairness: means dealing with others justly. A
leader must check all the facts and hear everyone
out before passing judgment. When people feel
they that are being treated fairly, they reward a
leader with loyalty and dedication.
8. Assertiveness and self-confident
• Assertiveness and self-confident: A leader
clearly states what he or she expects so that
there are no misunderstandings. An assertive
leader is a self-confident person and ensures a
win-win solution to any problem.
9. A positive attitude
• A positive attitude: is vital to relieve tension
and resolve conflicts. Effective leaders know
how to remain positive in adverse situations
and be able to inspire and energize the team.
Positive attitude fosters good camaraderie.
10. • To conclude, exceptional leaders are well
aware of the fact that they cannot
accomplish everything by themselves
and consider their peers and
subordinates as their pillars of strength in
every endeavor that they undertake. And
it’s a fact that people look up to and
respect leaders who believe in showing
others the way in creating future leaders.
