3. Why use Myths? Often, stories drawn from myths function to show ideals—such as, heroism and loyalty or sacrifice and loss . The purpose behind showing these ideals is to portray the actions of the hero as glorious or heroic. As mentioned in the previous slide, authors use myths to establish a firm plot for a story, but myths can be used in our day-to-day language. For example, if I think someone is exceptionally strong, I might describe him as Herculean. If I think of the first men to visit the moon, I might use the associated name of Apollo, a famous spaceship named after a Greek god.
