This and much more…
Other businesses, however, such as a restaurant, a
gardening company or a bank, see their fleets not as their
central tool, but rather as a need to an end. They need
vehicles to take their goods or services to their customers.
Quite often, these companies do not have the internal expertise, time or
inclination to ensure the professional management of their fleets.
Therefore, fleet management often becomes a burden and is dealt with in a
minimalist form.
Having both sorts of businesses in mind, Frotcom was
designed in such a way that it is powerful enough to
serve professional fleet managers; but it also user-
friendly in order to be used by non-vehicle-centric
businesses.
This has been Frotcom’s philosophy since the very start. The proof is that we are
proud to count as customers, transportation companies with more than one
thousand trucks and trailers, but also companies with only one van.
Rather than having customers adapting to Frotcom, we built Frotcom to adapt
to customers.

Project Citymotion shows results
In September 2010 ROADMAP informed about
Frotcom International’s participation in the
Citymotion project. You may remember the
image to your right, or the full video you can find
at http://mastersofmedia.hum.uva.nl/2010/05/16/the-new-cartographers-1-pedro-m-cruz/.
Project Citymotion, developed in the framework of MIT Portugal, uses several
traffic data sources, including anonymous tracking data and anonymous GSM
data, and then applies data fusion methods to determine interesting
information about mobility; in this early stage, in the area of Lisbon.
Some interesting results were now displayed in a conference held in Lisbon. A
traffic prediction system based on previous traffic, estimates how the traffic will
be in the course of a certain day or week. It will also estimate the time of arrival
according to start and end place and hour of the day/day of the week.
Several other studies were conducted, including a study on taxi occupancy,
typical taxi trip origin and destinations according to hour of day. Also, it was
possible to establish, for a given sports event, from which neighborhoods came.
This mechanism is important in order to predict the congestion of streets and
roads when certain special events occur, such as a sports or musical event.
Project Citymotion will now give way to a new stage where a mobility platform
will be built, making it possible to collect anonymous mobility data and then to
generate public and private services based on data fusion methods.
