Vehicle Tracking and Fleet Intelligence News
Editorial
henever companies like Cisco, Google, IBM or Microsoft decide to jump into a moving train, it is a strong sign that the train is about to pick up speed.
All these companies and many others will participate next week in the Internet of Things World Forum. Great, so what exactly is the Internet of Things (IoT) and why should you care?
If you look it up you’ll see there are several comprehensive descriptions, but to make a long story short, it is a network of embedded devices, sensors and actuators (the things), capable of communicating, through various channels, over the Internet.
“What for?” you may ask. Well, there are many different application areas and examples. Think of heart monitoring implants, in the area of health monitoring. A patient would be permanently monitored and checked for heart conditions. Think of elevators being monitored remotely for fault detection and preventive maintenance. Think of the heating in your living room to be turned on when your car is detected to be 10 min away from home.
Many of these things have been possible for a long time. What else is new? What is new is the sheer massification which is about to happen, due to decrease in hardware cost, miniaturization and reduction in power consumption needed to operate and communicate; and the cost reduction and increased coverage of communication channels.
To have an idea of how big this is expected to be, Gartner estimates that there will be nearly 26 billion objects on the IoT by 2020. The IoT will have to use IPv6 (IP addresses) to accommodate the extremely large address space required.
Nobody knows right now how imaginative and successful many IoT services will be. It’s one of those moments in which, I’m sure, reality will overcome fiction.
Frotcom has proudly helped start this revolution, more than 15 years ago, when we began tracking vehicles remotely. It was not called IoT, of course. But boy, was that a breakthrough…and fun, too.
Valério Marques, CEO - Frotcom International

New Features
For those who want details! Detailed tracking.
Detailed tracking is a new
alternative form of vehicle tracking,
in Frotcom. What defines the
detailed tracking is the fact that
the GPS tracking device in the
vehicle collects position
information every 2 seconds while
the vehicle is moving.
In order to keep communication costs as low as possible, the trail of interim
positions is not sent in real time. It is compressed and sent, along with the full data –
which includes speed, ignition and sensor data – every minute, or according to the
pre-set frequency.
So, when Frotcom receives the regular GPS report from the vehicle, it also receives a
trail of positions, corresponding to the path executed during the last minute. This
path is displayed in an animated sequence, so that every 2 seconds you can see how
the vehicle progressed throughout the path.
For locations where Google’s street view is available, a thumbnail photo will be
displayed, showing the last location of the vehicle or the location closest to each
trail position, as it progresses.

Understanding
trucks Blind Spots
Car drivers sometimes assume that drivers
of tractor-trailer trucks can see the road
better because of their higher vantage
point. But the truth is, trucks have major
no-zones, or blind spots, that can
dramatically limit the driver’s ability to
see other vehicles on the road.
That’s why it’s important to remind fleet
drivers of this simple rule: If you can’t see
the driver’s face in the side mirror of the
truck, the driver can’t see you.
Here’s a video, produced by the Utah
Department of Motor Vehicles, explaining
where these truck no-zones are.

Setting up your account to monitor driving time restrictions
If you are in the transportation business in Europe, this tip will for sure ring a bell.
As you know, legal constraints on driving time need your full attention in order not to have your drivers exceeding driving limits. Frotcom can help you a lot:
In Administration > Company profile > Driving conditions, apply the maximum driving time requirements to your drivers/vehicles:
You can also select for which classes of vehicles the rules are to be applied:
By default, the classes selected are: Truck, Semi-trailer and Tractor unit. You can also choose other vehicle types.
Frotcom uses default driving time parameters that implement Europe’s Regulation 561. However, you can define other time periods.
If you click the Default button, all parameters will be reset to the ones contained in Europe’s Regulation (EC) 561/2006 - Driving time and rest periods.
Tip of the month!

Case Study B2Gold Namibia improves drivers’ behaviour with Frotcom
B2Gold Corp. is a Vancouver based gold producer with three operating mines (two in Nicaragua and one in the Philippines) and a strong portfolio of development and exploration assets in Mali, Nicaragua, Burkina Faso, Colombia and Namibia.
Client Challenges
The construction of the Otjikoto Gold mine, located 300 kilometres north of Namibia’s capital city of Windhoek, started on January 2013 and will continue into the fourth quarter of 2014. It is anticipated that gold will be produced during the fourth quarter of 2014 with a ramp up to full production in early 2015. With a fleet of 100+ light vehicles involved in this operation, B2Gold Namibia needed a way to quickly know at all times the current status and whereabouts of all its vehicles at any given time, as well as to evaluate fleet performance and driving behaviour.
Frotcom Namibia’s approach
Known as a reference in Namibia, Frotcom Namibia was asked to present Frotcom to Mr. Leonhard Hinterholzer, Procurement & Logistics Manager in conjunction with Mr. Wayne Mauk, Maintenance Manager and Trainer at B2Gold and to organize a free trial in one of B2Gold Namibia’s vehicles. Frotcom Namibia, responded very quickly to questions and queries, the free trial was immediately implemented and a cost-effective proposal developed to meet B2Gold Namibia needs.
Benefits achieved
According to Mr. Leonhard Hinterholzer, “With a competitive price and cost of ownership offering, Frotcom is providing the company with a clear view of the monitored vehicles and drivers. We also noted that, with the installation of Frotcom, there was an immediate impact on safety factors such as reduction in speeding violations and a positive driving behaviour”. He also stated that the Frotcom training process worked very well and the support is effective.
Since implementing Frotcom, B2GOLD Namibia has been able to effectively monitor its vehicles and improve drivers’ behaviour, while optimizing fleet efficiency.
