4. Summary
This is a non-fiction story about a 14 year old girl, Anne Frank, who is forced to go into hiding with
her family and a few other close friends in Amsterdam, Holland because of World War 2. First Anne
has to get used to all the changes like no more luxuries. Also she needs to keep up with her school
work. On top of all that she must go through many of the awkward stages of a 14 year-old.
Anne got her diary for her 13th birthday, along with a satchel, some candies, and money. Yes she was
a very happy girl, with a loving family, healthy body, and money. That all changed on 5 July, 1942,
when Anne found out she, and several others, would be going into hiding the next day.
When Anne moved in she noticed that there were not too many luxuries. Sure there was electricity
and running water. But What about a balcony for fresh air? Through all her struggles Anne turns to
her diary for support and comfort. Being a 14 year-old, Anne went through many awkward stages,
but she kept it all to herself.
After a while in hiding, Anne turned to Peter for company, the two talked and laughed together. Anne
was slowly falling in love, and all the adults were making fun of Anne and Peter, especially Anne.
In the annex, food was starting to be scarce. Everyone always ate potatoes or beans. Relying on
coupons was hard, considering that the annex's coupon supplier was arrested for giving away illegal
coupons. No worries though, Miep, the helper, was lucky enough to find a new coupon supplier.

5. Summary (page 2)
After almost a year in hiding the annex members welcomed Albert Dussel, who was a retired dentist.
While he was moving in Anne, by her little wooden table discovered one of her hidden talents:
writing. Anne loved to write many pieces although none were published but her diary.
For a while Anne and Peter hung out, but Anne's father was concerned about how much time the
two spent together. Anne tried to handle this situation responsibly , but had to give in to her dad.
The famous day known as”D-Day” took place on June 6th 1944, when Normandy Beach was
attacked. This day brought joy to the annex members. The war maybe finally over! Although after
waiting for a few weeks nothing good happened except for one thing: Anne and her father started to
socialize more.
On August 4th, 1944 Anne and the 7 other annex members were caught and sent to concentration
camps. During their time in camps they found out that Russia was bombed. See Russia and
Germany had made a pact, but Hitler broke the pact and bombed Russia, but Russia got the last
laugh because they defeated Germany.

6. Summary (page 3)
After months of struggling with diseases and suffering from exhausting all annex members but
Anne's dad, Otto Frank, had died. All annex members that died were so close to surviving.
Peter died three days before his camp was liberated. However, on May 7 th, 1945 Adolf Hitler
committed suicide knowing that he lost the war. By May or June 1945 all camps were
liberated and the only survivor of the annex members was Otto Frank who moved in with
Miep, the woman who helped the people in the annex survive for over two years. This is how
the book went and almost all of Anne's diary. It was a diary of a young girl.
I have a question: What do YOU think of Adolf Hitler?
Smart? This is a Miep
Not Gies.

10. Theme/Main Idea/Life in the Annex
● Bravery! I chose bravery because everyday all 8 would get up,
get ready, and always have the hanging fear of being
caught by Nazi officers. Also, at the camps, they
were very brave and did not attempt to
escape or kill themselves.
● Strength! I also chose strength, not physical strength, but
emotional and mental strength because Anne and seven
others were stuck in a small annex for over 2 years with no
breath of air. Anne never gave up, and even though Mrs. Van
Daan had suicidal thoughts, she never gave up too.
● Life in the Annex: 7:15 AM- Wake Up! 7:15-8:30 AM- Get ready! (brush teeth, etc.)
● 8:30-11:45 AM- Lessons! 9:00 AM- Breakfast! 12:00 PM- Lunch!
● 12:30- 5:30 PM- Reading, Sleeping and late lessons! 5:30 PM- Talking.
● 6:00 PM- Dinner 6:45 – 10:30 PM- Debates, Talking, Radio. 10:30- Sleep!
THE NEXT DAY IS A REPEAT!
11. What I Think/Wonder
What I Think:
● I think Anne Frank could have made a bigger difference in the world if she were still
alive. Anne could have published more books that she had wrote, (well she did, just
wasn't alive to see it). I would have loved to met her, I think she would also be more
well known because a lot of kids today don't know who Anne Frank is.
● What I Wonder:
● What would be different if she were still alive?
● What else would Anne fulfill in life?
● What happened to the lost diary of Margot?
● Who spoke to her last?
● Is it true that Margot fell from the top bunk well being sick and then died?
● …I WONDER...
12. EXTRA INFORMATION
