I apply Ranganathan's 5 laws of library science to altmetrics, as part of a holistic research impact support service. I discuss what altmetrics are, what they measure, their uses throughout the research lifecycle, and where you can get them. I then apply Ranganathan's 4th law, saving the time of the user, to the harvesting of altmetrics by research information systems, embedding them at the point of need. The challenge of altmetrics is to change our concept of what an institutional repository is, from a simple container of research outputs to a smart system that harvests and catalogs a much broader range of output and impact data elements.

Traditional bibliometric methods of evaluating academic research, such as journal impact factors and article citations, have been supplemented in the past 5-10 years by the development of altmetrics (alternative metrics or article level metrics). Altmetrics measures impact of research, data and publications, such as references in data and knowledge bases, article views, downloads and mentions in social media and news media. This presentation gives a brief background to altmetrics and demonstrates how Rhodes University librarians are using social media to raise the visibility of the research output of their institution. (Rhodes University is in Grahamstown, South Africa)

This presentations reports on a systematic and comprehensive comparison of the coverage of the three major bibliometric databases: Google Scholar, Scopus and the Web of Science. Based on a sample of 146 senior academics in five broad disciplinary areas, we therefore provide both a longitudinal and a cross-disciplinary comparison of the three databases. Our longitudinal comparison of eight data points between 2013 and 2015 shows a consistent and reasonably stable quarterly growth for both publications and citations across the three databases. This suggests that all three databases provide sufficient stability of coverage to be used for more detailed cross-disciplinary comparisons. Our cross-disciplinary comparison of the three databases includes four key research metrics (publications, citations, h-index, and hI,annual, an annualised individual h-index) and five major disciplines (Humanities, Social Sciences, Engineering, Sciences and Life Sciences). We show that both the data source and the specific metrics used change the conclusions that can be drawn from cross-disciplinary comparisons.

There is an ever-increasing need to make your research more visible as you establish your career, and metrics to measure your research performance when it comes to thinking about promotion and probation. This session will focus on bibliometric research indicators (such as the Journal Impact Factor and SCImago, author metrics such as the h-index and g-index) and sources for accessing citation data (Web of Science, Journal Citation Reports and Google Scholar). These may be one of several factors to consider when thinking about where to submit an article manuscript for publication to maximise the potential academic impact of the research, and tools useful to be familiar with if they form part of any research evaluation you and your authored journal papers may be subject to. An additional section will also look at tips to consider when writing an article abstract to maximise its discoverability and cite-ability. Learning Outcomes: • Understanding of meaning and intended uses of bibliometric research indicators • Understanding of how some key indicators (JIF, H-index) are calculated • Ability to make a judgement as to the appropriateness and limitations of such indicators • Ability to use online datasets to view and calculate key bibliometric measures • Awareness of some factors which can increase the visibility and discoverability of your own research in bibliographic databases. Previous participants have said: "The session has helped provide me with the basic information on Journal Impact and where to find information such as an author's h-index. It will be useful for future journal submission consideration." "This session was very useful for me to become familiar with the topic."

Altmetrics is an emerging area encompassing broader assessment of scholarly impact through downloads, links, and online conversations to fill gaps in assessing research. Bibliometrics is the traditional form of measuring the impact of scholarly research through citation rates. The Research & Instruction Librarian for Sciences and the Scholarly Communication Librarian at Wake Forest University will compare bibliometrics and altmetrics, and discuss their applications in science information literacy and research assessment in higher education.

Aims of the Module Researchers intending to publish are met with an increasingly complex world of options, influences and pressures. The digital landscape and developments in open access publishing provide additional dissemination channels beyond traditional print; bibliometric tools purport to measure journals’ academic impact ; funder mandates, institutional mandates and routine research assessment exercises place additional requirements on authors which may influence their choice of where and how to publish. The aim of this module is to help researchers navigate this territory and make well- informed decisions. Content • Background to the development and use of publication metrics as research indicators, and the issues surrounding this. • Journal metrics: assess the academic impact of journals, including Journal Impact Factors, Journal Citation Reports and other measures. • Citations and author metrics: tools available to assess an authors’ individual citation counts and impact, including the h-index. Approach The module will take the form of a workshop with on-screen demonstrations and hands-on opportunity, with some presentation and hand-out materials highlighting issues and discussions within the academic community. Intended outcomes By the end of the session participants will: • Increased awareness of the various journal and author metrics available. • Developed understanding of the key issues around the use of these metrics and what research behaviours might be incentivised. • Awareness of the potential opportunities for exploring wider academic and non-academic impact of publications from altmetric tools available.

Previous studies have found that papers with publicly available datasets receive a higher number of citations than similar studies without available data. In addition, new research has found that by putting your research data online, you’ll become up to 30% more highly cited than if you kept your data hidden. In this workshop I will elaborate the advantages of sharing research data and introduce some relevant “Research Tools” for increasing datasets visibility.

How are Institutional Repositories (IRs) being used? We can get some clues from the kind of links made from the general web to IRs. Results will be presented from a project looking at the links made to the larger IRs in New Zealand; as well as three well established overseas IRs. The project examined whether links were the equivalent of formal citations, or whether they were informal links. Formal links comprised only 1.85% of the links, indicating that IRs may not be primarily forming part of the formal research communication structure. However informal links (largely from blogs and Wikipedia) comprised 18.2% of the links made to the IRs. Subject directory links comprised almost 50% of links. These results indicate that New Zealand IRs have a useful role in making research information available to the general public, even though they do not appear to be referred to intensively by other researchers.

The annotated bibliography for your course is now due. The annotated bibliography should be about a page and must contain at least three research sources. Your annotated bibliography must be in APA format. For guidelines click the following link: Annotated Bibliography Example : ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY 1 APA 6 th Edition Guidelines: Annotated Bibliography An annotated bibliography is the full citation of a source followed by notes and commentary about a source. The word “annotate” means “critical or explanatory notes” and the word “bibliography” means “a list of sources”. Annotations are not the same as abstracts. Abstracts are purely descriptive summaries often found at the beginning of scholarly/ academic journal articles. Annotations are meant to be critical in addition to being descriptive. Format: The format for an annotated bibliography is similar to that of a research paper. Use one-inch margins on all sides, double-space your entries, and arrange each entry in alphabetical order. Hanging Indents are required for citations in the bibliography, as shown below. The first line of the citation starts at the left margin and subsequent lines of the citation will be indented. Example: Journal Article with DOI Calkins, S., & Kelley, M. (2007, Fall). Evaluating internet and scholarly sources across the disciplines: Two case studies. College Teaching , 55 (4), 151-156. doi:10.1111/j.1747- 7379.2007.00759.x This article discusses the problem of unintentional online plagiarism and many students’ inability to evaluate, critique, synthesize, and credit online sources properly. Two case studies from different disciplines, which were designed to foster critical evaluation of the Internet and scholarly sources, are discussed in detail. The CARS (Credibility, Accuracy, Reasonableness, Support) checklist for evaluating research sources is also introduced and applied in these case studies. I found this article useful because much of the content of these case studies can be easily adapted to fit assignments in different academic disciplines. One information literacy assignment in one quarter at college is not enough. If students are expected to use the Internet in a responsible way, educators must provide guidelines and relevant experience that allows students to apply those guidelines in practical ways. Makes the case that we should let metrics do the "heavy lifting" in the UK REF [Research Excellence Framework]. I show that a university-level ranking based on metrics (Microsoft Academic citations for all papers published with the university's affiliation between 2008-2013) correlates at 0.97 with the The REF power rating taken from Research Fortnight’s calculation. Using metrics to distribute research-related funding would free up a staggering amount of time and money and would allow us to come up with more creative and meaningful ways to build in a research quality component in the REF.

With more memory available, system performance of three Dell devices increased, which can translate to a better user experience Conclusion When your system has plenty of RAM to meet your needs, you can efficiently access the applications and data you need to finish projects and to-do lists without sacrificing time and focus. Our test results show that with more memory available, three Dell PCs delivered better performance and took less time to complete the Procyon Office Productivity benchmark. These advantages translate to users being able to complete workflows more quickly and multitask more easily. Whether you need the mobility of the Latitude 5440, the creative capabilities of the Precision 3470, or the high performance of the OptiPlex Tower Plus 7010, configuring your system with more RAM can help keep processes running smoothly, enabling you to do more without compromising performance.

Heather Hedden, Senior Consultant at Enterprise Knowledge, presented “The Role of Taxonomy and Ontology in Semantic Layers” at a webinar hosted by Progress Semaphore on April 16, 2024. Taxonomies at their core enable effective tagging and retrieval of content, and combined with ontologies they extend to the management and understanding of related data. There are even greater benefits of taxonomies and ontologies to enhance your enterprise information architecture when applying them to a semantic layer. A survey by DBP-Institute found that enterprises using a semantic layer see their business outcomes improve by four times, while reducing their data and analytics costs. Extending taxonomies to a semantic layer can be a game-changing solution, allowing you to connect information silos, alleviate knowledge gaps, and derive new insights. Hedden, who specializes in taxonomy design and implementation, presented how the value of taxonomies shouldn’t reside in silos but be integrated with ontologies into a semantic layer. Learn about: - The essence and purpose of taxonomies and ontologies in information and knowledge management; - Advantages of semantic layers leveraging organizational taxonomies; and - Components and approaches to creating a semantic layer, including the integration of taxonomies and ontologies
