1. How did you use media technologies in the
construction and research, planning and
evaluation stages?
I used a simple digital video recorder, and tripod when filming
my original footage. The tripod was particularly helpful when
interviewing and filming my time-lapse. Most of the original
footage is hand held because I felt that it was the most
convenient way of recording. It would have been difficult to
get into the small spaces in the environment I was filming
in, e.g. the kitchen. However I also used this method because
it makes my documentary more believable, to the audience it
appears as raw footage captured. This helps to emphasis my
argument as it is presented as the ‘reality’. To improve my
work if I was to repeat it I would use a video camera of better
quality, it is noticeable in the documentary of the focusing
and de-focusing.
The video editing software I used was iMovie for
Mac computers. This software made it easier to
edit and sequence my original footage but also
allowed me to clip my archive footage. This
software made the making process of my
documentary more manageable. However the
amount of effects were limited and simple which
therefore made the editing on the documentary
quite plain.
2. I gathered my archive footage from Jamie
Oliver's Food Revolution broadcasted by
the channel ABC. After researching the
Fair Use law I knew I could only include a
certain amount of the archive footage
and use it within guidelines.
I gathered photos by
researching Jamie Oliver
using the internet. For my
newspaper advert I used
clip art and photo- posting
websites/social media like
Tumblr to obtain
photographs of fatty foods.
1 of the 3 images mocking Jamie
Oliver had already been made.
But to create the other 2 images
(confused and magic) I used
Photoshop and Paint.
To record my narration, I used
professional radio microphones
connected to a mac, the
programme I used was
GarageBand. By using
professional equipment I was
able to record clear voice overs
for my narration.
To record the interviews I used the same digital
video recorder that I used to capture the
original footage and a tripod. I was able to pick
up a good image but the sound quality was not
good. The back ground noise was too loud so
the dialogue was hard to hear. I tried to find a
solution by editing it on GarageBand, I was able
to improve it slightly but the background noise
was still far to loud. Because my equipment is
limited I was not able to use a ‘Boom
microphone’ so if I was to record an interview
again I would have a longer think about the
environment and when to shoot the interview.
3. I created the documentary by filming original
footage in a secondary school, this included
interviewing cooks and filming their daily
routine. I also used photographs and archive
footage from Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution to
emphasis my argument. I used IMovie and
Garageband on a MAC computer to editing and
create sound.
I began the documentary by planning some sort of sequence to
guide me on my next steps. I then began to film short clips of
cooks preparing food and the food itself. To get some footage i
could work with and begin editing. From here I interviewed a
teacher on her views and then went on to create my narration.
This included much research on Jamie Oliver and his campaign.
Once this was written I recorded it and began the long editing
process on Garageband. At this point i had a more focused
sequence. The last parts of making the documentary was
interviewing the cooks and creating the time lapse. I then
focused on editing to make sure the documentary ran
smoothly and connected well. I also added a soundtrack and
title sequence that would appeal to my target audience.
4. This A2 project – Jamie Oliver: The Naked Truth differs
greatly from my AS Thriller project – The Mystery of
the Missing. Firstly the project type is different, I have
created part of a documentary whereas AS was part
of a film. Therefore the features included this year
differ significantly from AS Level. There was also a big
difference in processes. A lot more editing time was
put into creating this documentary. I also had to
research and include a range of footage types, original
and archive. This documentary making process
included much more research than The Mystery of the
Missing. More attention also had to be given to the
sound of the documentary, I had to concentrate on
the narration/sound more in this project.

I think my technical skill of editing has improved dramatically
throughout creating this documentary. I have had to really
critically analyse the footage so I only include the best footage
that emphasises my message. I haven also had to work at the
flow of my editing making sure that all the clips i use link
together well and that each part of footage gives evidence
behind the other clips and really enforces my argument. I
think my technical skill of working with sound has also
improved. I have used new equipment and improved my
ability to se sound software.
One other big difference in the projects of AS and A2 is the
importance of a message. The storyline was important in the
AS Thriller but in the documentary the message is what most
important. Especially in an expository documentary their has
to be an argument, or something that is hidden in society that
the film maker is trying to make known or release. Therefore
the reason why more time had to be taken when editing and
creating the narration because the soul purpose of the
expository documentary is that every part is emphasises that
message.
5. How effective is the combination of your main
I set out to promote and ancillary texts?
my documentary by
and Radio advert. The
my
productChannel Four. Becausecreating a Newspaperaudience is similar to mychannel I would air also airs similar
documentary on is
the channels target
documentary’s. It
documentaries and programmes to Jamie Oliver: The Naked Truth. For my adverts to be effective I had to research
advertising specifically Channel Four. I looked at a variety of different Channel Four adverts and also made reference to
the Channel Four Style Guide that gave detailed information on Channel Four Advertising. The aim of the adverts are to
persuade my target audience to take an interest in the documentary but most of all watch it. The purpose of my
documentary is to inform the public of my argument and to make it known to my audience what I am exposing. Jamie
Oliver: The Naked Truth is a documentary arguing that Jamie Oliver’s ‘Feed Me Better’ campaign was a failure and that he
abandoned the ‘cause’. It is an expository documentary because it argues a point of view. I also want to include the
humour in my documentary onto my advert. I wanted to create an advert that the target audience found
interesting, something that would catch their eye, and allow their imagination to run a little wild. My target audience
includes a range of people; young people because they can relate to the documentary but also families and parents of
school children, to inform them of the food situation in schools. The humour in the documentary appeals to younger
people, whereas the message can appeal more to parents. It reassures them that school meals are not as unhealthy and
‘grim’ as Jamie Oliver made out.
Part of my research
The Britain’s Forgotten Children advert, is
effective because the advert portrays the
documentary perfectly all in one image, I like
the way they the child is in focus being sucked
into the big bad world and how he has been
made to seem smaller than a usual child to
emphasis the little importance he symbolises.
However the advert does not recognise the
help the care system gives to children. I could
use the symbolism used in the advert to help
me in my documentary advert.
6. I have created an advert by using other Channel
Four adverts to inspire and influence me. I have
used key features of Channel Four adverts so the
channel link is clear. I have also entwined Jamie
Oliver’s programme style into the advert to give the
audience as much information as possible. I have
used photoshoped images that link to the
documentary. The advert appeals to my target
audience because it is eye catching and uses bright
colours, it will also include humorous images to
appeal to the younger target audience.
I have included images of Jamie Oliver crying and a
decapitated turkey dinosaur, the channel
logo, time, date and the title.

9. I set out to create a radio advert that
would both interest my target
audience but also persuade them. I
wanted to include narration from the
documentary, some interview sound
and also record some new sound to
inform the target audience of the
information they needed to know to
enable them to watch the
documentary.
The radio advert was successful
because it contained all the
information that was needed to
inform the audience but it also
allowed them to be imaginative; to
think, wonder and guess what would
be in the documentary. To improve it i
would have paid more attention to the
volume and change in tone and pitch
of my voice for the narration.
I used Garageband on a Mac computer.
This enabled me to create a flowing audio
even though it was cut and edited. It also
allowed me to add the soundtrack from
the documentary into the advert. To
record the original sound I used the same
microphone used to record the narration
of the documentary.
