TEACHING THROUGH
STORYTELLING
Intro
 One of the most effective ways to teach is to tell a story.
Having an anecdote helps when making a point and
capturing your audience’s attention. Having relatable
metaphors and examples helps when explaining a
concept. Stories create an image in the student’s mind
that allow them to understand what’s being taught at a
visceral level. A few good stories can make any dry
lesson become lively and memorable.
Storytelling Do’s & Don’ts
 There is a threshold however where storytelling becomes
counterproductive to teaching. Here are some things you should
avoid and embrace
 1. Don’t make the story too long. Your stories are usually a bigger
deal to you than it is to your listener. Always tailor the length of your
story according to how interested you think your students are.

 2. Don’t lose focus. Your students want to see a point to your story.
Don’t mention any unnecessary details (unless it’s amusing). Don’t
go off on any unnecessary tangents (unless it’s amusing).
 3. Appeal to people’s emotions. The more strongly you can make
your audience feel, the less likely they are to ignore you.
 4. Have some big stakes. When something is at stake, your
audience cares about the outcome of your story. The
possibility of great success or deep loss are both interesting
for any listener.
 5. Don’t be vague. If you tell a story too quickly, you might
leave out important details for the telling of the story. Your
students won’t be able to see what you’re seeing and
follow what you’re saying, and you’ll end up wasting your
time.
 6.Don’t avoid closure. Any unanswered question can leave
your listeners frustrated.
The more effective of a storyteller you can become, the
greater the kind of teacher you could be.
