A Day in the Navy

•   On Sept. 9, 328,226 active duty officers, Sailors and midshipmen; 65,117 selected Reserve Sailors,
    with 4,454 mobilized Reserves; and 203,796 civilians are serving in the Department of the Navy.

•   There are 284 active ships in service; 144 (51 percent) ships, including five aircraft carriers and four
    large-deck amphibious ships, and 37 (69 percent) submarines are underway away from homeport.

•   There are 8,947 individual augmentees, 4,134 of whom are mobilized Reserves, deployed on the
    ground around the world in support of overseas contingency operations.

•   Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus addresses the survivors and family members of victims from the
    9/11 terrorist attack on the Pentagon during a Department of the Navy 9/11 Observance.

•   New York City citizens tour the USS New York (LPD 21), visiting the ship’s well deck, flight deck,
    U.S. Marines’ presentation of weaponry and the ship’s formal display case of 9/11 memorabilia. The
    World Trade Center Rescuers Foundation and the New York Chapter of the American Society of
    Safety Organizations present a mosaic banner to USS New York.

•   Retired Lt. Kevin Schaeffer, who was critically injured on 9/11 while on duty in the Navy Command
    Center, speaks at the U.S. Naval War College’s 9/11 remembrance ceremony in Newport, R.I.

•   USS Nimitz (CVN 68), USS George Washington (CVN 73) and USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77)
    Sailors commemorate the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

•   Sailors and Marines attend the 9/11 Memorial Candlelight Vigil at the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space
    Museum in New York City. Rear Adm. Herman Shelanski, commander, Carrier Strike Group 10,
    presents a memorial wreath honoring all service members killed in Iraq and Afghanistan.

•   Twenty-four Wounded Warrior cyclists and approximately 100 other bicyclists participate in Joint
    Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Ft. Story, Va., and Naval Station Norfolk’s 32-mile 9/11 Tribute
    Ride, while 532 students and staff run in Naval Station Newport’s 9/11 Race to Remember 5K.

•   Naval Construction Battalion Center Gulfport, Miss.; Naval Base Ventura County, Calif.; Naval Air
    Station (NAS) Meridian, Miss.; NAS Kingsville, Texas; NAS Jacksonville, Fla.; NAS Key West,
    Fla.; NAS Pensacola, Fla.; NAS Oceana, Virginia Beach, Va.; and Naval Support Activity Mid-
    South, Millington, Tenn., hold 9/11 commemoration events.

•   Sailors, civilians and Navy families attend a 10th anniversary 9/11 observance ceremony at the Naval
    Aviation Memorial Chapel at NAS Pensacola. NAS Pensacola Commanding Officer Capt.
    Christopher Plummer speaks about what the Navy and other services have done since the 9/11 terror
    attacks.

•   The Naval Oceanographic Office, in Stennis Space Center, Miss., and the Naval Ice Center, in
    Suitland, Md., conduct a remembrance ceremony in honor of Aerographer's Mate 1st Class (SW)
    Edward T. Earhart and Aerographer's Mate 2nd Class Matthew M. Flocco who died in the 9/11
    terrorist attack on the Pentagon.
•   More than 950 recruits at the Navy's only boot camp, Recruit Training Command, Naval Station
    Great Lakes, Ill., pause for a wreath ceremony and moment of silence to remember the more than
    3,000 citizens that perished in the 9/11 attacks.

•   Office of Naval Research employees honor the fallen with a commemorative U.S. flag display,
    created with the names of those who perished in the 9/11 terrorist attacks in Arlington, Va.

•   Virginia-class, pre-commissioning unit California gets underway from Naval Station Norfolk to begin
    weapons systems acceptance trials.

•   USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) returns to its homeport of San Diego after a seven-month deployment
    to the western Pacific and U.S. Central Command AOR.

•   USNS Joshua Humpreys (T-AO 188) conducts replenishment-at-sea evolutions with USS Roosevelt
    (DDG 80) and French Navy frigate FS Surcouf (F711) near the Horn of Africa, and USNS
    Tippecanoe (T-AO 199) conducts replenishment-at-sea evolutions with USS Truxton (DDG 103) and
    British Navy frigate HMS St. Albans (F83) in the Arabian Gulf.

•   USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74), with embarked Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 9, conducts passing
    exercises with the Royal Malaysian Navy and distinguished visitor and media embarks in the
    Andaman Sea following a five-day port visit to Port Klang, Malaysia.

•   Elements of Assault Craft Unit 4, embarked aboard USS Bataan (LHD 5), conduct landing craft, air-
    cushioned operations in the U.S. 5th Fleet AOR.

•   Naval Surface Warfare Center Corona, Space and Naval Warfare System Command Pacific and
    Pacific Missile Range Facility conclude a two-week push for the Navy's renewed science, technology,
    engineering and math (STEM) strategy at the Oahu and Kauai, Hawaii, Science and Technology
    Education Partnership Conferences, reaching more than 6,000 students.

•   A Maritime Civil Affairs and Security Training Command mobile training team teaches a basic dive
    and salvage course to the Bangladesh Defense Force in Chittagong, Bangladesh.

•   Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 133 Seabees in Timor‐Leste renovate a secondary
    school, while NMCB 133 Seabees renovate a high school in Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia.

•   NMCB 4 Seabees complete the last seven kilometers of road improvement along Route Red West
    near Salaam Bazaar, Afghanistan, improving road conditions along the 29-kilometer route for
    coalition forces and local Afghans.

•   Twenty-six helicopter pilots from Training Air Wing 5 receive their wings at NAS Whiting Field in
    Milton, Fla., and four jet pilots from Training Air Wing 1 receive their wings during a ceremony at
    the 2011 Tailhook Convention in Reno, Nev.

•   Rear Adm. Bill McQuilkin relieves Rear Adm. Pete Gumataotao as Combined Task Force
    78/commander, U.S. Naval Forces Korea during a ceremony in Seoul, South Korea.
•   USS Nebraska (SSBN 739) Sailors support Omaha Navy Week, which features the Guardians of
    Freedom Air Show 2011 and the Navy Blue Angels, by participating in community events, engaging
    with local veterans and volunteering in service projects.

•   Five Pacific Submarine Force prospective commanding officers graduate from the Submarine
    Command Course, which prepares submarine officers to take command of leadership positions and
    submarines in the Navy.

•   USS Dewey (DDG 105) and USS Wayne E. Meyer (DDG 108) visit Port Klang, Malaysia, during a
    deployment to the U.S. 7th Fleet AOR.

•   USS Boxer (LHD 4), with embarked Commander, Amphibious Squadron 1 and USS Comstock (LSD
    45), arrive in Guam as part of a deployment to the U.S. 7th Fleet AOR.

•   USS Albuquerque (SSN 706) is visiting Yokosuka, Japan, as part of a western Pacific deployment.

•   USS Pinckney (DDG 91) visits Singapore, USS Kidd (DDG 100) and USS Ford (FFG 54) visit
    Phuket, Thailand, and USS Tortuga (LSD 46) visits Chuk Samet, Thailand.

•   High speed vessel Swift’s (HSV 2) crew conducts bilateral training as part of the Africa Partnership
    Station mission in Banjul, Gambia.

•   Military Sealift Command’s USNS Big Horn (T-AO 198) provides logistics services to U.S. Navy
    and coalition maritime partners in the Mediterranean Sea in support of Operation Unified Protector in
    Libya.

•   Los Angeles-class fast attack submarines USS Toledo (SSN 769) and USS Albany (SSN 753)
    conduct certifications underway.

•   USS Newport News (SSN 750), USS Miami (SSN 755) and USS Montpelier (SSN 765) conduct
    maritime security operations in the U.S. European Command AOR.

•   Cmdr. Adam Palmer relieves Cmdr. Steven Hall as commanding officer of USS West Virginia
    (SSBN 736) at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, Va.

•   USS Florida (Blue Crew) Sailors participate in events during a namesake visit to Tallahassee, Fla.

•   Explosive Ordnance Disposal Company 3 prepares for its upcoming six-month deployment to
    Afghanistan in support of Counter-Improvised Explosive Device Task Force Paladin.

•   Naval Station Rota, Spain, hosts a "rehearsal of concept" for two transiting Army units as the
    installation conducts its 14th intermodal operation. This meeting includes all those involved in the
    process of moving helicopters and cargo from the pier to the airfield, as well as a brief overlook at the
    schedule of flying the cargo into theater.

•   The Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group, comprised of Amphibious Squadron 5, USS Makin
    Island (LHD 8), USS New Orleans (LPD 18) and the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, conducts a
    composite training unit exercise off the coast of California in preparation for a deployment.
•   USS Frank Cable (AS 40) chief petty officer (CPO) selectees lead the chief’s mess and guests
    through a morning physical training session on Polaris Point, Guam.

•   Approximately 150 CPO selectees participate in the third annual CPO Selectee Challenge at Naval
    Station Norfolk.

•   The medical staff at Navy Medical Center in Portsmouth, Va., administers influenza vaccinations to
    service members during a base-wide immunization drive.

•   Ten Sailors from the Apprentice Class of 2011 at Trident Refit Facility in Kings Bay, Ga., graduate
    from their curriculum becoming nationally accredited submarine repair journeymen as marine
    machinists, welders, pipefitters, machinists, shipwrights, painters and electricians.

•   U.S. Navy Reserve frigate USS Boone (FFG 28) completes a northbound transit of the Panama Canal
    en route to the ship’s theater security cooperation port visit in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
    The visit will serve as Boone’s final engagement for the Southern Seas 2011 deployment.

•   Naval Air Systems Command’s Reserve Program Persistent Ground Surveillance System team
    oversees 36 operational sites, providing 761 hours of full-motion video for forward operating base
    force protection and regional security objectives in Afghanistan.

•   While in Grafenwoehr, Germany, seven Sailors from Navy Reserve U.S. European Command
    Detachment 208 support exercise Combined Endeavor 2011, a joint communications exercise
    attended by 39 countries.

•   The Office of Naval Research successfully conducts the testing and detonation of a Selectable Output
    Weapon prototype at the Naval Air Warfare Center, China Lake, Calif.

•   Eight Sailors take college placement tests for mathematics and English, 23 Sailors receive academic
    counseling and establish individual education plans and 14 Sailors register for SAT/ACT college
    entrance exams and foreign language proficiency tests.

•   Four Marine Corps clarinetists prepare for International Clarinet Fest 2012 at the School of Music at
    Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story.

•   Naval Supply Systems Command’s (NAVSUP) Weapon Systems Support coordinates the
    participation of 270 military and civilian volunteers from Naval Support Activity Mechanicsburg, Pa.,
    in the United Way Harrisburg, Pa., capital region's “Day of Caring.”

•   Fuels division personnel from NAVSUP’s Fleet Logistics Center Site Sigonella, Italy, service 31 U.S.
    and NATO aircraft providing 122,773 gallons of JP-5 aviation fuel for use in daily operations in the
    U.S. 6th Fleet AOR and NATO’s Operation Unified Protector.

•   The U.S. Navy Facebook page shares a video of aviators and aircrew from U.S. Naval Air Forces's
    VX-31 in China Lake, Calif., talking about training and experimentation flights and asks fans to post
    comments about their Navy day. Blake Huey writes, “I replaced deck drains and conducted a DC
    (damage control) drill.” Linda Fenway Krouse writes, “Thinking about my son and his shipmates on
    board the Stennis...Godspeed and fair winds, Sailors.”

•   Recruiters help 168 people join America's Navy.

Stennis (CVN 74), with embarked Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 9, conducts passing exercises with the Royal Malaysian Navy and distinguished visitor and media embarks in the Andaman Sea following a five-day port visit to Port Klang, Malaysia. • Elements of Assault Craft Unit 4, embarked aboard USS Bataan (LHD 5), conduct landing craft, air- cushioned operations in the U.S. 5th Fleet AOR. • Naval Surface Warfare Center Corona, Space and Naval Warfare System Command Pacific and Pacific Missile Range Facility conclude a two-week push for the Navy's renewed science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) strategy at the Oahu and Kauai, Hawaii, Science and Technology Education Partnership Conferences, reaching more than 6,000 students. • A Maritime Civil Affairs and Security Training Command mobile training team teaches a basic dive and salvage course to the Bangladesh Defense Force in Chittagong, Bangladesh. • Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 133 Seabees in Timor‐Leste renovate a secondary school, while NMCB 133 Seabees renovate a high school in Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia. • NMCB 4 Seabees complete the last seven kilometers of road improvement along Route Red West near Salaam Bazaar, Afghanistan, improving road conditions along the 29-kilometer route for coalition forces and local Afghans. • Twenty-six helicopter pilots from Training Air Wing 5 receive their wings at NAS Whiting Field in Milton, Fla., and four jet pilots from Training Air Wing 1 receive their wings during a ceremony at the 2011 Tailhook Convention in Reno, Nev. • Rear Adm. USS Frank Cable (AS 40) chief petty officer (CPO) selectees lead the chief’s mess and guests through a morning physical training session on Polaris Point, Guam. • Approximately 150 CPO selectees participate in the third annual CPO Selectee Challenge at Naval Station Norfolk. • The medical staff at Navy Medical Center in Portsmouth, Va., administers influenza vaccinations to service members during a base-wide immunization drive. • Ten Sailors from the Apprentice Class of 2011 at Trident Refit Facility in Kings Bay, Ga., graduate from their curriculum becoming nationally accredited submarine repair journeymen as marine machinists, welders, pipefitters, machinists, shipwrights, painters and electricians. • U.S. Navy Reserve frigate USS Boone (FFG 28) completes a northbound transit of the Panama Canal en route to the ship’s theater security cooperation port visit in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The visit will serve as Boone’s final engagement for the Southern Seas 2011 deployment. • Naval Air Systems Command’s Reserve Program Persistent Ground Surveillance System team oversees 36 operational sites, providing 761 hours of full-motion video for forward operating base force protection and regional security objectives in Afghanistan. • While in Grafenwoehr, Germany, seven Sailors from Navy Reserve U.S. European Command Detachment 208 support exercise Combined Endeavor 2011, a joint communications exercise attended by 39 countries. • The Office of Naval Research successfully conducts the testing and detonation of a Selectable Output Weapon prototype at the Naval Air Warfare Center, China Lake, Calif. • Eight Sailors take college placement tests for mathematics and English, 23 Sailors receive academic counseling and establish individual education plans and 14 Sailors register for SAT/ACT college entrance exams and foreign language proficiency tests. • Four Marine Corps clarinetists prepare for International Clarinet Fest 2012 at the School of Music at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story. • Naval Supply Systems Command’s (NAVSUP) Weapon Systems Support coordinates the participation of 270 military and civilian volunteers from Naval Support Activity Mechanicsburg, Pa., in the United Way Harrisburg, Pa., capital region's “Day of Caring.” • Fuels division personnel from NAVSUP’s Fleet Logistics Center Site Sigonella, Italy, service 31 U.S. and NATO aircraft providing 122,773 gallons of JP-5 aviation fuel for use in daily operations in the U.S. 6th Fleet AOR and NATO’s Operation Unified Protector. • The U.S. Navy Facebook page shares a video of aviators and aircrew from U.S. Naval Air Forces's VX-31 in China Lake, Calif., talking about training and experimentation flights and asks fans to post comments about their Navy day.
