Editor's Notes
Compliance with Emergency Procedures is an area in which the school district evaluates its teachers as well. Failure to comply with emergency procedures on two occasions results in a citation in the employee’s file. One instance of non-compliance results in a warning. This presentation provides a quick overview of what needs to be done in different emergency situations.
All teachers are issued a sign with their name. This sign should be keep in a clear location for easy accessibility by substitutes. The sign is green on one side, and red on the other. For a fire drill, it is important to maintain accountability for all students. Take class sign and roll book as soon as the alarm goes off. Close windows, turn-off lights, and direct students toward the meeting place, and then close the door. The meeting place is listed on the door of the room. Hold up the red sign at the meeting place, take attendance, and if all students are present turn the sign to the green side. If a student is missing, keep the red side present. Do not leave your class to try and locate the missing student. An administrator or other personnel will check on you. Wait for directions.
During an evacuation drill, grab the class sign, roll book, and evacuation path sign. The evacuation path sign is on the door. Have students follow you (the teacher) to the meeting place. Leave door open so it can easily be checked. Do not worry about lights or windows. Hold up red sign and take attendance. If all students are present, turn it to the green side. If a student is missing, keep the red side up. Wait for an administrator to check on you. They can send someone in for a missing student. Do not leave your class.
All rooms have a lock-down key under the desk in a magnetic box. Open the box and remove the key. Quickly, lock the door. Do not touch the handle or it will unlock. Do not let anyone leave, and do not open the door for anyone. Move to closets if available, or sit close together away from doors or windows. Keep quiet. Wait for instructions before making any movements or opening any doors.
All rooms have a magnetic box under the desk. Remove the key from the box, and quickly lock the door. Cover any windows or doors which show access to the hallway. Do not let anyone touch the door or leave the room. Continue with class as usual, and wait for instructions before dismissing students.
During a weather drill, close windows, but do not lock the door. Locking the door can prevent emergency personnel from reaching you if needed. Push down heavy objects if possible. Sit with backs against the wall, crouch down, and cover heads. Shelter may also be taken under stationary items. Wait for further instructions.
