9. boot from dvd

10. darwin bootloader
at command line, enter ‘-v’

11. verbose mode

12. create hfs partition
os x gui will load
utilities disk utility

13. run installer

14. reboot

15. install drivers
(sound, networking, graphics, et al)
/System/Library/Extensions/SampleKext.kext/Contents/Info.plist
add device ID to existing kext
and/or
install new kext
drag into /System/Library/Extensions
open terminal
sudo -s
password
cd /System/Library/Extensions
chown -R root:wheel SampleKext.kext
chmod -R 755 SampleKext.kext
rm -rf Extensions.mkext (Leopard)
rm -rf /System/Library/Caches/com.apple.kext.caches/
Startup/Extensions.mkext (Snow Leopard)
killall Terminal
reboot

17. don’t panic
kernel panic = fatal error
reboot and try again
delete recently installed kext in single-user mode (-s)
troubleshoot in verbose mode (-v)
