Famous 20th Century Artists: Surrealism and Early Modernism
Let me introduce myself: Mariana FreijomilSeoane Place of brith: Buenos Aires (Argentina) Languages: Spanish, Catalan (bothnativelevel) and English. EDUCATION - Graduate in History of Art at the University of Barcelona (UB).    - I have the CAP teaching certificate (Certificado de AptitudPedagógica).    - Master on Teaching Spanish as a foreign language at the UIMP (Universidad Internacional Menéndez Pelayo). - Master on Contemporary Film and Audiovisual Studies at theUniversitatPompeuFabra( course 2011-2012 / 2012-2013)

During the next three months we’ll run through the world of Art from the beginning of the 20th Century to the first avantgard movements.    We’ll focus on three Spanish artists involved in the entrance of Art in the contemporary era:  Pablo Picasso Salvador Dalí  Joan Miró.  
We’ll see how the Spanish culture and their evolution and training periods abroad are expressed in their works.   In order to understand all this, we’ll talk of different art movements and philosophical ideas and we’ll learn how to find these influences in their works.    Wewilllearntoanalyzeworks of art locatingthem at thehistorical and cultural context.

evaluation
20% Class participation  Classroom interaction Field studies Journal Attendance I willgive a markfrom 1 to 4. 25% Midterm written exam  (November 2ond)  Up to unit 4 in the syllabus  25% Final writtenexam(December 14th) Covering the whole list of contents   30% Final project ( December 5th and 12th) 15% Written paper  15% Class presentation
whatwilltheexams be like? Both exams will consist on two parts with the same grading: Part I  Multiple choice questions: there will be 3 options and only 1 correct.  The midterm exam will consist on 25 questions y the final exam 50.   Part II Analysis of 2 works previously commented in class. 4 pictures will be given and the student will choose 2 which they will have to comment in 1 page (1 side per work).   To be valued:  -Focusing on relevant information. -Expressing correctly. -Ability to synthesize.
Work proposals for the term. The Spanish Pavilion in the World Expo held in Paris in 1937. 2. Picasso and the Catalan artists of “ElsQuatre Gats”. 3. Dalí and Pop Art. 4. Joan Miró and the “earth” concept. 5. Surrealist cinema: Dalí, Buñuel and Lorca. 6. Marcel Duchamp and the ready-mades. 7. Gala: Dalí’s Muse. 8. Man Ray and the surrealist photography 9. Joan Miró and his experiments with raw material. 10. Dalí: the press and the mass-media. October 3th: Presentation of thetopics.
General characteristics.   Presentation of the topic and its relevance in the introduction.  2. Historical context: historical, social and political frame.   3. Artistic and philosophical context: Main artistic and aesthetic movements related to the topic.   4.Topic development: Sections which frame the topic.  Outlines:  Artists: Relevance and general career.  Techniques: Techcniques on the works, evolution and precedents. Analysis of the works. Ideas which underlie the artistic works and their evolution.  5. Conclusion: The main ideas of the topic will be drawn and its relevance and influence on art today will be assessed
The following will be valued: Critical thought and discernment. Ability to synthesize.  Ability to interrelate ideas belonging to different fields. Originality. Clear and accurate writing. Bibliography, webgraphy and visual resources.  Formal characteristics.  1. The work must have a front cover with the title, name of the subject, year, name of the student and name of the professor. An Index of contents will be required. 2. You can use either Arial (11) or Times New Roman (12).  3. Spacing: 1.5. 4. The length of the writing work is a minimum of 10 pages and a maximum of 20. Front cover, pictures, index and bibliography are not included.
5. The bibliography and webgraphy must be attached in an appendix (Appendix I). 6. The pictures must be attached in a different appendix (Appendix II). The pictures of paintings must include title, author and year. The photographs must include a brief text and the year.  7. The work must be accurate and argued with relevant bibliography.   8. The bibliography quotes will be presented as footnotes. 9. The final project must be handed in both in printed version and pdf the same day of the presentation. The document of the work presentation must be handed in with the writing work.

  • 6. During the next three months we’ll run through the world of Art from the beginning of the 20th Century to the first avantgard movements.   We’ll focus on three Spanish artists involved in the entrance of Art in the contemporary era: Pablo Picasso Salvador Dalí Joan Miró.  
  • 7. We’ll see how the Spanish culture and their evolution and training periods abroad are expressed in their works.   In order to understand all this, we’ll talk of different art movements and philosophical ideas and we’ll learn how to find these influences in their works.   Wewilllearntoanalyzeworks of art locatingthem at thehistorical and cultural context.

  • 11. whatwilltheexams be like? Both exams will consist on two parts with the same grading: Part I Multiple choice questions: there will be 3 options and only 1 correct. The midterm exam will consist on 25 questions y the final exam 50. Part II Analysis of 2 works previously commented in class. 4 pictures will be given and the student will choose 2 which they will have to comment in 1 page (1 side per work). To be valued: -Focusing on relevant information. -Expressing correctly. -Ability to synthesize.
  • 12. Work proposals for the term. The Spanish Pavilion in the World Expo held in Paris in 1937. 2. Picasso and the Catalan artists of “ElsQuatre Gats”. 3. Dalí and Pop Art. 4. Joan Miró and the “earth” concept. 5. Surrealist cinema: Dalí, Buñuel and Lorca. 6. Marcel Duchamp and the ready-mades. 7. Gala: Dalí’s Muse. 8. Man Ray and the surrealist photography 9. Joan Miró and his experiments with raw material. 10. Dalí: the press and the mass-media. October 3th: Presentation of thetopics.
  • 13. General characteristics.   Presentation of the topic and its relevance in the introduction. 2. Historical context: historical, social and political frame. 3. Artistic and philosophical context: Main artistic and aesthetic movements related to the topic. 4.Topic development: Sections which frame the topic. Outlines: Artists: Relevance and general career. Techniques: Techcniques on the works, evolution and precedents. Analysis of the works. Ideas which underlie the artistic works and their evolution. 5. Conclusion: The main ideas of the topic will be drawn and its relevance and influence on art today will be assessed
  • 14. The following will be valued: Critical thought and discernment. Ability to synthesize. Ability to interrelate ideas belonging to different fields. Originality. Clear and accurate writing. Bibliography, webgraphy and visual resources. Formal characteristics.  1. The work must have a front cover with the title, name of the subject, year, name of the student and name of the professor. An Index of contents will be required. 2. You can use either Arial (11) or Times New Roman (12). 3. Spacing: 1.5. 4. The length of the writing work is a minimum of 10 pages and a maximum of 20. Front cover, pictures, index and bibliography are not included.
  • 15. 5. The bibliography and webgraphy must be attached in an appendix (Appendix I). 6. The pictures must be attached in a different appendix (Appendix II). The pictures of paintings must include title, author and year. The photographs must include a brief text and the year. 7. The work must be accurate and argued with relevant bibliography. 8. The bibliography quotes will be presented as footnotes. 9. The final project must be handed in both in printed version and pdf the same day of the presentation. The document of the work presentation must be handed in with the writing work.
