Sometimes, art/design students in India just want to escape from their immediate context. In this presentation, I try to encourage and motivate them to take up the real challenges before them.

What people really want - how #HumanCenteredDesign can help your charity or c...Patrick Olszowski
I was due on stage in 10 minutes and I was totally uncertain if I could do it.
This was me yesterday before I was due to speak at Charity Comms' Psychology of Communications conference.
My entire presentation was a risk. I was going to ask the audience of senior charity sector leaders to do things that I was pretty sure they would find difficult.
I would be rewarding those who worked with me and doing my utmost to persuade others, again and again, who were not yet ready to get involved.
The last time I had presented publicly was in front of an audience of people I knew well. But this was different. Would it work? I had no idea.
Eventually, I went on, starting with a line about how working for yourself is like being a solo polar explorer. Moments of incredible beauty, followed by realising you are surrounded by deep crevasses. I got a laugh and relaxed.
Throughout, people shared their views on the charity sector, by moving up and down an imaginary line in the auditorium - depending on propositions I gave them (and the reactions of other audience members).
I ran another experiment, trialling seven different approaches to get people to sign up to my email newsletter - Top Tips for Tough Problems - all about innovation and charities (www.outrageousimpact.co.uk/tips/)
For those who wouldn't join the email, and were open to it, I had discussions with them on the microphone about what might persuade them. The ability to alter the frequency of emails, sharing this content on LinkedIn and being clearer about what was in the email, persuaded a few.
In the end, 60% of the audience joined the email list and received sweets, a chance to sit in a 'winners' circle', got their name on a plaque on the wall, approval from colleagues, applause and more.
Innovation is about building something new to try and improve lives. It might work. Or flop. But as long as you learn from it, it can never be a failure. That was the key lesson I got yesterday.
This is the presentation you find here.

The presentation shows how to create and use a "problem space" to organize complex challenges. The central metaphor for the talk is the "civic handshake" — a process by which different parts of society cooperate through the informal exchange of information and the sharing of responsibilities.

Design Futures: What world do we want to design?Sean Buch
As designers, we take decisions around how people use technology everyday and in turn how their lives are shaped. Critical design allows us to explore the cultural, social and ethical implications of emerging technologies. In doing so, we can champion design that builds positive futures and avoids disastrous results.

Question everything - Designing more effectively for social impactRichard Anderson
Standard human-centered design practices are often well-suited for well-structured problems, but fall short for considering the broader social implications of solutions to well-structured problems and for attempting to address ill-structured or so-called “wicked societal problems” (e.g., our broken healthcare system, homelessness, addiction to social media or electronic devices).
Richard will review many of the common characteristics of well-structured, ill-structured, and wicked problems, and, with the workshop attendees, will discuss their implications.
Then, by questioning everything about the standard design process for well-structured problems, Richard will identify common process shortcomings, present examples of projects that ignored such shortcomings as well as of projects that didn’t, and provide attendees with the opportunity to experience ways of how to address such shortcomings.
Attendees will emerge better able to target social impact intentionally and better able to design for achieving that intentional social impact.

New Brief for Design—Manoeuvering the Behavioural Iceberglodaya
Increasingly, designers are being asked to apply their skills and talents to achieve a 'behaviour-change' objective. Why is this happening? What do designers know and do that makes them specially competent for such tasks? This presentation aims at holding up a mirror to practitioners and hopefully showing them a way ahead to equip themselves even better for next-generation challenges.

An exploration of themes pertinent to curating and museum/exhibition design, followed by a case study of Conflictorium - a participatory museum on conflict
What are the forces that contribute to cultural innovation and change, and how should cultural policies and institutions approach it, given their various (purist, modernist, nationalist, economic) agendas? In this exploration, I try and argue for the role played by "ordinary people" through their diffused but pervasive "everyday actions and practices", suggesting that this is a vital and democratic force that must be championed at all costs as it is essential to building social capital. In our increasingly globalized and corporatized society, the role of the ordinary person is gradually transforming from an active agent-creator to a passive recipient-consumer, leaving less and less scope for individual creativity and innovation. While this triggers a subversive and tactical re-appropriation of cultural goods as shown by de Certeau, I ask why artistry and culture cannot remain a common, affordable and easily-accessible praxis as it still does in Indian and other "poor & under-developed" societies, rather than turning into a premium and exclusive commodity.
I've used this presentation across a range of audiences, and it works pretty well all the time. I've tried to cover here the entire CI process, particularly with its linkages to business strategy.
This presentation takes the uninitiated through the tremendous power of graphic design. It also has a few works by myself, tagged onto the greats from history!
In most cases, art/design students have little idea of how business works. This presentation is an overarching view of the strategic role of design in business, but also peppered with some critical questions.

Implicitly or explicitly all competing businesses employ a strategy to select a mix
of marketing resources. Formulating such competitive strategies fundamentally
involves recognizing relationships between elements of the marketing mix (e.g.,
price and product quality), as well as assessing competitive and market conditions
(i.e., industry structure in the language of economics).
Putting the SPARK into Virtual Training.pptxCynthia Clay
This 60-minute webinar, sponsored by Adobe, was delivered for the Training Mag Network. It explored the five elements of SPARK: Storytelling, Purpose, Action, Relationships, and Kudos. Knowing how to tell a well-structured story is key to building long-term memory. Stating a clear purpose that doesn't take away from the discovery learning process is critical. Ensuring that people move from theory to practical application is imperative. Creating strong social learning is the key to commitment and engagement. Validating and affirming participants' comments is the way to create a positive learning environment.
