Book Formatting: Quality Control Checks for DesignersConfidence Ago
This presentation was made to help designers who work in publishing houses or format books for printing ensure quality.
Quality control is vital to every industry. This is why every department in a company need create a method they use in ensuring quality. This, perhaps, will not only improve the quality of products and bring errors to the barest minimum, but take it to a near perfect finish.
It is beyond a moot point that a good book will somewhat be judged by its cover, but the content of the book remains king. No matter how beautiful the cover, if the quality of writing or presentation is off, that will be a reason for readers not to come back to the book or recommend it.
So, this presentation points designers to some important things that may be missed by an editor that they could eventually discover and call the attention of the editor.

2. THE BEACH
The last verse of our song includes explicit
description of a couple taking a romantic walk
on a beach. ’And I’ll take you to the beach, and
we’ll walk along the sand’. Therefore I think it
would be effective; like Goodwin suggests, if
some lyrics are parallel with the on-screen
visuals. We could use the long shot shown here
in order to capture both the sand and sea while
tracking our stars walking while holding hands
down the beach. I really like this shot as it is
taken at sunset which creates a sepia tone to
the image. It is important that we chose the
correct time of day to re create the natural
lighting created by the sun position.
3. THE SUPERMARKET
Supermarket scenes are extremely
easy for me to re-create because
they are easily accessed by civilians.
It would be extremely difficult to
clear the supermarket of people in
an attempt to only get your star in the
image (like in this example).
Although I think having people
walking around helps to create the
desired verisimilitude.
4. THE LIVING ROOM
This location would also be very
easy to re create as we would
simply use our own living rooms. I
like the attention to detail in this
location e.g. the use of living room
dress: plant, curtains and fire
place. I also really like the use of
natural light streaming through the
window.
5. THE CAR
We will possibly use a car as one of
our locations as it will show the
couple in an enclosed environment
with just each other for company
and amusement. This location can
therefore be used to show the
couples true happiness or to
expose the issues in their
relationship. This enables the
viewer to see the couple in a more
exposed way as it appears to be a
more intimate environment.
6. THE PARK
I think this is a really
nice location (in a
children's
playground) as it can
be easily used to
show the couple in a
playful and fun way.
7. We could use a location
like this to re-create the
cliché action seen on
screen of writing the
initials of your partner
onto a tree.
8. THE WOODS
The woods are an
effective way to create a
desolate an d lonely
atmosphere which we
could use to possibly
symbolize a breakdown
of a relationship.
9. THE SEA
I really like this shot as I think
it is visually spectacular. The
use of long shot makes the
sea seem infinite and I think
we could create the same type
of shot using the Humber
Bridge as our location.
10. PERFORMANCE SHOTS: GIGS/CONCERTS
For both albums entitled ‘Red’ and ‘Fearless’ which include songs on the track
list of that same name Taylor Swift has released a video which documents the
album tours. The majority of the video included performance shots in an arena
location. These shots portray the singer in close up or medium close up
singing to the camera, extreme long shots of the crowd and longshots, and a
range of shots showing the artist interacting with the crowd.
11. A CONCERT SHOT THAT I PARTICULARLY
LIKE… This shot is amazing. I love that in a concert
location you can captures both the audience and
the artist in an extreme long shot. As a result of the
media, artists are worshiped by their fans. The
media creates excitement surrounding an artist
e.g. by provoking gossip via magazine articles and
following them round with cameras because
photos of them are worth a lot of money.
This image represents Taylor Swift as being on a
pedestal, she is a single figure being projected
into the sky in front of a bright light which implies
that she is angel or god-like. In contrasts the fans
are crowded together, literally and metaphorically
beneath her.
12. LOCATION SHOTS CREATED BLUE SCREEN
Blue screen would be a very useful
tool if we want to film extravagant
locations e.g. this very large
futuristic mansion at the top of a
hill. Using blue screen would mean
we can use a location like a tropical
beach for our line in our chosen
song “and I’ll take you to the beach”
from Ed Sheeran’s ‘Wake me up’.
13. ON LOCATION SHOTS VS…
Studio shots are extremely useful when
filming the artist singing into camera
as it makes it easier to direct the
audiences attention to the artist as
there are not background distraction.
This artists costume is the same
pattern and colour as the background
which makes her face stand out well.
14. …LOCATION SHOTS
However, location shots help to
create verisimilitude e.g. this
argument is believable because they
are in a kitchen. If the actors were in
a studio with a patterned wall like on
the previous slide the audience
would not believe the narrative (they
are a true couple having an argument
in their home which is relatable to
most people in a relationship).
15. INTERIOR
When shooting an interior shot
it is important that we project
enough light on to the subjects
face. In this shot, although the
background is dark the artists
face is still illuminated. We
could possibly use lamps or
torches.
16. INTERIOR VS…
When we film our music video we will not have access
to studio lighting. Therefore interior shots will only be
effective if we have a high amount of natural lighting
like the shot to the left.
However, lighting can be used to connote mood. In the shot above the
one bright stream of light connotes the two characters happiness in
their relationship. In contrast the shot below is much darker because
the couple are engaged in an argument.
Therefore, if we have to film a shot in our music video where the
characters have a shift in mood we can use an interior shot even
though the lighting may not be the strongest.
17. …EXTERIOR
When shooting an exterior shot it is
important that we have enough light
projected onto the subject
especially if we are shooting at
night time. We will not have access
to studio lighting so we would
possibly have to shoot in a city
location like the one to the left as a
lot (but not all) of the lighting
appears to be from street lights.
