Question 2
1. 2. How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
2. FILM The image we wanted to create with the trailer was to make the audience question and anticipate what the film would be about, we wanted to make them interested immediately. We also wanted them to feel the tense atmosphere the trailer creates. We aimed to do this with the use of sound, camera angles, editing and mise-en-scene. With the sound we chose 2 different soundtracks for different parts of the trailer. The first is a suspense builder with drums and synths with a high tempo, this was used at the beginning and end of the trailer so the audience would know the two scenes are the same setting. The other soundtrack is played in the middle of the trailer as background music for the voiceover, we chose a relaxing sounding tune from jamendo.com. (The other soundtrack was also off this website). It had to be calm and not upbeat music because the story the voiceover is telling is not scary, we then faded in the other soundtrack when the voiceover story turns to the horror side of the film. For the voiceover we used a female voice because the story starts off calm and then the voice went tenser for the turn in the story. With camera angles we used close ups of the main character so the audience could establish she is important to the film, we also used a lot of point of view shots and over shoulder. These help to not reveal the identity of characters we don't want the audience to know about yet. The use of still images in the trailer was to help the story of the narrator/voiceover.
3. FILM The editing throughout the trailer is quite fast paced especially at the beginning and end because we wanted to build up the suspense and keep the audience watching. When researching we took inspiration from films such as 'Quarantine', 'Prom Night', 'Tormented', 'The Final Destination', 'Drag Me To Hell' and 'Scream'. We researched these films because they are aimed at the same target audience as our film, teenagers. From 'Quarantine' we took the idea to film in a very dark room with just a torch for light, similar to the infrared used in the film. 'Prom Night' also used the sound effects of screams to leave the film on a cliff-hanger for the audience like we have. Also all the films we researched used female victims, we converted to this horror convention and used a female as our main lead. The titles for our trailer were made on a font generator site, interactimage.com. We chose a font called 'a night for crocodiles', because it looks like blood dripping and fits in with the genre of horror perfectly. We also chose the colour red, following horror conventions, to connotate further the image of blood. We chose to use taglines in our film because all films use them, they also give extra information about the what the story of the film might be.
4. POSTER For the poster we took our main inspiration from the Prom Night poster. We wanted to use the main character as the focal point of the poster and found inspiration for the photo on deviantart.com. The extreme close up of the girl with a gag over her mouth connotates kidnapping which is what we aimed to do. We shot our own version of the image on a digital camera and edited it on Photoshop, changing the brightness and contrast, mirroring the image and making it black and white to get the horror effect. The title of the film is the same font throughout the other products, we placed it in the centre of the page over the victims mouth so your eyes are drawn to it, the colour also makes it stand out. We used a tagline at the top of the page linking to the film as it is the same as the one we used in the trailer. The font is the same throughout the poster, Agency Fb, it is also the same on the website. Our inspiration for this font came from the Saw 5 poster and we thought it fit in with our layout so used it.
5. POSTER The credits, institutions, release date and website are all at the bottom of the poster so not to draw attention from the image and title. The font and colour of the release date and website are different from the credits so they are separated and noticeable. For the poster we wanted to create the image of a professional horror poster, connotating being kidnapped and making it clear the general plot of the film. By not showing the identity of the girl this makes the viewer guess what might happen in the film. I think our audience will be interested in the poster and take an interest in the film because we have used a young actress and striking image, similar to 'Prom Night' which was a big success.
6. WEBSITE Our website was created on a free website making site, weebly.com. We followed through the theme of red, white and black and used the font Agency FB throughout as well. After looking at the 'Prom Night' website and 'The Final Destination' we made the decision to base the website on black and red, conventional to the horror genre. We noticed most websites have similar pages so interpreted this into our website choosing pages such as about the film, cast & crew, trailer, gallery and downloads. The black background has continuity through the site creating a dark backdrop for pictures and text. This links with the film and poster as we used dark lighting in the film and also a black background on the poster. We featured the poster as one of the available downloads and the trailer appears on it's own page. Pictures from the film and stills are on the gallery linking directly to the film.
7. DO ANYTHING DIFFERENTLY.. If we were to do anything differently I would have liked to make the trailer flow a little better and also be better quality, however this was due to cameras so was unavoidable. I think overall the trailer was the best it could be considering the technology we had available. The sound is the best part and how the variety of shots fits in with it works really well and really gets the story of the film across. The voice over is what links the whole trailer together and came out exactly how we wanted. I think we could have gotten a few extra shots and scenes in there to make it a bit more detailed which would have improved it. The poster is the best of our products and looks really professional, the image, title and tagline all fit together perfectly. I think if the photo was a bit brighter this would have improved it. The institution we chose fits with the genre of our film and would make the audience link with this and know they usually make horror films, making the genre of the poster obvious. Our website could be improved if it was interactive and used moving backgrounds and Flash. However we weren't able to do this as we would have had to pay for it and the hosting website we used is restricted. The pages we chose to use work well together and fit a conventional film website. I think the website is the best it could be considering what we had to use. The downloads page is the most professional as we made wallpapers as well as putting the poster on.
