6. Artist’s Practice
Leach’s 2009 exhibition, entitled The
Next Billion Years
My work draws on the aesthetics of
17th-century Dutch art. The scientific
revolution and the modern commercial
corporation both came from the 17th
century, with the Netherlands at the
centre of both.
Science and technology seems to be
dependent on commerce, and yet at
the same time threatened by it.
Corporations and governments seek to
use the language of science to
persuade and manipulate. Historically,
though it is non-human life that has paid
the highest price for technology.
Still, all life has a stake in technological
advancement. Space exploration
represents a quest for immortality, and if
there is a possibility for any kind of life to
extend beyond planetary timescales this
is how it will be achieved.

7. Discuss…
From that quote;
From where does Leach draw his inspiration?
What themes does Leach explore in these works?
What do you believe Leach wants the audience to
consider when viewing his works?
And lastly, (we’ll view some of the works in the next few
slides) describe the way in which Leach uses visual
metaphors in his works.

11. Homework
Read the following review of the exhibition…

sullivan-strumpf-fine-art.html
And take a look at the entire exhibition here…

In response, write a 300-500 critique of the exhibition. Make
sure you address the technical accomplishment, strength of
the concept, the conveying of that concept with the
chosen materials and techniques, and your impression of
the pieces.
