When filming our first Vox pops we made an error as we accidentally held the microphone too high when recording therefore showing the microphone in the shot. This was very unprofessional however we used the scale tool to crop the shot and correct the mistake. We also used the scale tool again for some cutaways that didn’t have such good framing. As you can see the blue lined box is the framing box. We where able to enlarge the image so the microphone was off the screen or to adjust and improve framing of cutaways Framing box In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? When researching we found that in real documentaries such as panorama background footage would be used whilst the narrator was speaking (voice over). I n super size me docume ntary especially, we found that the background footage visually displayed and matched the script of the voiceover. For example when the voice over said the words McDonalds the background footage would be of the McDonalds restaurant logo. We decided to copy this convention as we found it very effective at keeping the attention of the audience. We used cutaways such as words from a website to visually match and support what the narrator was saying. We also used visuals of people walking around and a download bar/button for when we said the word download. We also used a sign for a restaurant called ‘the mix’’ for when we said ‘the Vox pops gave use a mixed response’’ this was highly effective when watching the documentary. Therefore this also helped our documentary comply to the conventions of real media products. We found a mixed response We went to Solihull sixth form college Establishing shot

Some conventions where not used in our article such as the drop caps, caption and white background. We also added Different conventions to our article as we added the date and name of the magazine at the bottom of the page as well as the use of a black background and subheading. In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? Drop caps As you can see we did try the drop caps on our magazine, however as the first letter of our article was a ‘J’ and therefore we didn't think the drop cap looked very attractive or professional as it didn’t fit in. We also preferred the black background to the white background as we thought it worked better and fitted the theme of our documentary therefore improving our brand identity. As for the caption for our main image we where unable to find a convenient place to put this without ruining the article. If we could improve this article however I would like to add one. Therefore our article challenged the conventions of real media products. Black background Sub heading Date and magazine name Adding drop caps Over the shoulder shot
In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? As you can see we manipulated our article using photoshop in order to help the image stand out and attract attention as well as make it look more professional and fit our colour theme of blue and black. We did this by going to image>adjustments>photo filter. We then check the filter box and clicked the ‘ deep blue’ option from the drop box. Photoshop manipulation to photos for our documentary TV listings article. We then check the filter box and clicked the ‘ deep blue’ option from the drop box.
In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? As you can see we wrapped the text of the article around the grab quote this was made our article look very professional, we also find that it makes the article look more organised and therefore aesthetically pleasing to our target audience making them want to read it. by using text wrap we have also followed the common convention of real media products. (see article to the right.) To improve we could have text wrapped the article text here as well. We have formatted our article text in three columns alike this real media article below as we thought 3 columns looked tidy and organised . It also helped leave space for the quotes and more pictures in the bottom right corner. Therefore we have complied to the conventions of real media products making our Article look professional and as aesthetically pleasing.
In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? In our radio trailer we used decided to use a young narrator for our voiceover in order to appeal to a young audience as they would be able to relate to the voice. we also used Vox pops quotes as this also gave the audience more young teenage voices, as our target audience is young adults aged 17+ the audience will be able to relate to Vox pops voices as they will be the same age as their friends. we also chose to have fast pace music to create an upbeat, energetic feel to the radio trailer yet again making the radio trailer appeal to the young target audience as this music is young and energetic. The music track we chose for our radio trailer was the same track we used for our documentary therefore giving the products we created brand identity. Therefore allowing audiences to recognise the documentary and therefore it promotes the documentary to more audiences in an effective way as people usually listen to the radio in the car with friends or family. The audience will hear the radio trailer and remember the soundtrack and suggest their friend who is with them to watch it. Conventions used for our radio trailer/ documentary
In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? we also chose to have pictures of our Vox pops as they where young familiar faces to our target audience given the average age of our Vox pops to be 17 therefore once again allowing our audience to relate to them. Conventions used for article In our article we used decided to use a blue, black and white colour scheme in order to appeal to a young audience because vibrant electric colours such as the blue we used would be aesthetically pleasing as it is a young energetic colour. We also found that the electric blue colour stranded out from usual TV listings articles as it was very bright and grabs the attention straightaway as it is different to plain black and white articles. (the black background also helped our article stand out)
In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? In our documentary we had an off-screen narrator we decided that although real media products used onscreen narrators we would use an off-screen narrator as we felt this made the audience feel they were investigating illegal downloading rather than the presenter. This therefore challenged common conventions of real media documentaries. We also didn’t use many transitions as we felt some transitions and effects available weren't appropriate such as the star or explode transition. Instead we used simple fades out, this challenged real media products as in the panorama documentary at the start they use a wipe from right to left for a transition, however we felt in comparison to fades didn’t look as professional and wasn’t appropriate for the content of our documentary. Conventions challenged in our documentary explode transition wipe from right to left transition http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rg5Oa6MQe_o
Also in real media documentaries on channel 4 we found that Vox pops are usually filmed on the high street however we decided to film them indoors in the college corridor as we found it was better for be able to hear the Vox pops over the busy noise of the street, it was also windy therefore the sound quality would have been effected due to the microphone picking this up. Therefore by filming our Vox pops indoors we were able to gain a balance or background noise but it wasn’t too loud that we couldn’t hear them. We also felt that filming indoors was more suited to the style of our documentary and fitted it well. In many documentaries we found that animations to present statistics were used. However we didn’t involve these as it didn’t suit the style of our documentary nor did we have to software available or know how to use the software to make the animations. Therefore challenging usual media conventions.
