Reminders, Other Notes
Prep for Test Next Week
Warm-Up
Class Work:
(Order of Operations, Integers, Translating,
Writing & Solving Equations)
Notes & Reminders:
 You must get a gmail account and register yourself at
Khanacademy.org. This is 20% of your grade, AND it really
helps you learn algebra.
 Beginning Monday, the room will be open at lunch and after
school for anyone who makes an appointment at least a
day before. I only have 4 computers, so only 4 students can
work per session.
 Turn in signed syllabus document by tomorrow to get credit
on this easiest of all assignments. If I have not checked your
notebook, I will do so today & tomorrow.
Test #1 Topics:
Our 1st test will be on Tuesday, September 16. Please make a
note of this to remind yourself. Like all tests, it will be 10
questions. The topics for this test are:
1. Simplifying Expressions
--Key Concept: Combining Like Terms
2. Solving Simple Equations (1 or 2 step)
--Key Concepts:
a.) Isolate the variable (get the variable by itself) on one side
of the equation by performing opposite operations.
b.) Always solve for the positive form of the variable.
3. Translating Sentences into Expressions or Equations
--Key Concepts: sum, difference, product, quotient, less
than, the quantity of, no more than, at least.
Warm-Up:
Pencils Down; Mental Math Only!!
1. n + 6 = 12
2. 56 = 7x 3. y - 17 = 41
4.
푘
20
= 4 5.
20
푘
= 4 6. 6m = 48
Expressions & Equations: Translating/Solving
1. Five less than a number is 18. What is the number?
2.Two-thirds of a number is equal to 11. What is the number?
3. Solve: A board 76 inches long is cut into two pieces.
One piece is 5 inches less than twice as long as the first.
How long is each piece?
Warm-Up
Write an expression to represent:
Three less than three times a number x.
Three times the quantity of a number decreased by three is nine.
풙
ퟑ
- 6 = 7
Step 1. Move the 6 by adding to right side.
Step 2. Multiply both sides by the denominator
Warm-Up:
Let’s put all this algebra we’ve learned to
solve this:
2x + 1
Perimeter =
x x
50 ft.
2x + 1
Find the dimensions
of the rectangle?
(How long is the L & W)
What we know:
~ Formula for perimeter of rectangle?
~ How to solve an equation by performing the opposite operation
~ How to combine like terms
The dimensions are: W = 8 L = 17
Formulas:
1. Perimeter of a Square: 2. Area of a Square:
3. Perimeter of a Triangle:
= Side + Side+ Side
4. Area of a Triangle:
= ½ base x height
or, ½ (base x height)
P = 4S
The area of a square is actually the
same as the area of a rectangle: LxW
However, since the lengths of the sides are the
same, you are multiplying a number by itself.
So, the formula for the area of a square is:
A S2
Warm-Up:
1. Translate & Solve:
The difference between a number and four.
The sum of three times a number and eight.
Four less than the product of four and a number is nine.
The quotient of a number and eight is one and five-tenths.
2. Simplify the Expression:
a2 + a + a2
2x + 3y – 5x + 2y 5(a – 2b) – 3(a – 2b)
