Rounding off numbers to nearest 10, 100 and 1000 for grade 3 and 4

1. ROUNDING OFF NUMBERS
GRADE 3 and 4

2. How it works:
Round off to nearest tens
1 Examine ones place. Compare the digit at ones place with 5.

Digit at ones place can be:
Digit >5 or Digit <5 or Digit = 5.

If Digit <5, replace digit at ones place with 0 and write tens place as it
is.
If Digit >5 or Digit =5 , replace digit at ones place with 0 and add 1
at tens place.

We will take three examples
How it works:
1 54
1) Examine ones place : 4
2) Compare with 5 i.e; 4<5
3) Ones place replace with zero
and no change in tens place.
4) Rounded off number to nearest
ten is 50

1) Examine ones place : 5
2) Compare with 5 i.e; 5=5
3) Ones place replace with zero and add
1 at tens place.
4) Rounded off number to nearest ten is
70

and add 1 at tens place.

4. Round off to nearest hundreds
How it works

Examine tens place. Compare the digit at
tens place with 5.

Digit at tens place can be:
Digit >5 or Digit <5 or Digit = 5.

hundred place and replace
all the digit at right side of
hundred( tens and ones)
with 0 .
If Digit >5 or Digit =5 , add
1 at hundred place and
replace all the digit at right
side of hundred( tens and
ones) with 0.

replace all the digit at right side of

3) Add 1 at hundred place 6+1 = 7 and
replace all the digit at right side of
hundred (tens and ones) with 0.
4) Rounded off number to nearest
hundred is 700

2) Compare with 5 i.e; 6>5
3) Add 1 at hundred place 5+1 = 6 and
replace all the digit at right side of
hundred (tens and ones) with 0.
4) Rounded off number to nearest

6. Round off to nearest thousand
How it works

Examine hundred place. Compare the digit
at hundred place with 5.

of thousand with 0
