John Steers, an Elon University student, recently worked for the San Miguel Academy Summer Program as an assistant in programming. Hoping to ultimately go into music and event production, John Steers is focusing on a major in strategic communications and a minor in sport and event management at Elon.

3.  The School of Communications at Elon
University offers four majors, one of which is
strategic communications. The school is
one of America’s 18 private universities and
colleges offering an accredited program in
communications, and it requires students to
complete at least 72 non-major credit
hours. Furthermore, each student must
complete a professional, off-campus
internship. Students are also expected to
complete a semester abroad, a double
major, or a minor outside communications.

4.  Students who choose to major in strategic
communications learn about how nonprofit,
corporate, and governmental organizations
communicate with their publics. One of the degree
requirements is 52 credit hours in the field of
communications. Students are also required to take a
four-hour course in business and a two-hour course in
public speaking. Compulsory courses for the degree
include Media Writing, Strategic Writing, Creating
Multimedia Content, and Media Law and Ethics. In
addition, students can choose from various
communication electives for a total of 52 hours;
however, eight of those hours are waived for double
majors working towards degrees outside the field of
communications.
