The Main Idea at Camp Agawam is a summer camp program founded in 1971 that provides free week-long summer camp experiences for more than 100 Maine boys aged 9 to 14 each year who otherwise would not be able to attend camp. The program was started by Dave and Peg Mason to give opportunities to boys in need, and campers are referred by community leaders and permitted to return each summer until age 14 if they have positive experiences.

2. John Steers is a strategic communications major with a minor in sports and event
management at Elon University in North Carolina.

In addition to taking courses such as media writing and global communications at the
Elon University School of Communication, John Steers has gained experience in event
planning and stakeholder engagement through summer positions with organizations
that serve children in need.
One of these organizations is the Main Idea at Camp Agawam.

3. Founded by Dave and Peg Mason in 1971, the Main Idea program centers on outreach
for boys and young men who would not otherwise have the opportunity to attend a
summer camp.

Every June, more than 100 Maine residents ranging in ages from 9 through 14 attend
the Main Idea program for a week, at no cost to their families.

4. Prospective campers are referred to the program through community leaders such as
school principals, teachers, clergy, and directors of youth organizations.

Once accepted, each camper is permitted to attend every summer until he reaches
the age of 14, provided that each summer remains a positive experience.
