1. Hyperbole

3. Oxymoron
a figure of speech that combines
contradictory terms
Ex: “That joke was seriously
funny ”

Repetition of Sounds
Ex: “Peter Piper picked a
peck of pickled peppers.

5. Simile
A comparison using
“like” or “as”
The flower was as
bright as the sun.

6. Metaphor
A comparison that does not
use “like” or “as”
Ex: John is a real pig
when he eats.

7. Onomatopoeia
Words that imitate sounds

8. pun
A play on words
Ex: “The best way to
communicate with a fish is to

9. Idioms
An expression, word,
or phrase that have a
figurative meaning.
Ex: It’s raining cats
and dogs outside.

10. Imagery
Vividly descriptive word
usage that helps the reader
create pictures within their
minds
Ex: I walked through the lush, green
forest at dawn. I could see the golden
rays of light peaking through the leaves
and hear the sounds of the singing birds.
