2. ABOUT THE ORGANISATION
Ashray-Akruthi
is a registered nonprofit organization working for the
hearing impaired children from
underprivileged backgrounds based in
Hyderabad. They have around 200
students attending their school.
3. THINK: WHY DID WE ADOPT THE
PROJECT
We
wanted to work in the direction of
education for children. After a lot of
research, we were able to identify the
organization which has a scope with a need
for further intervention from the society.
To identify the area to make a difference,
a need analysis was conducted by us.
4. Teachers
use only the
blackboard/chalk method and follow
the Oral method.
Students with hearing impairment can
benefit if all the 3 methods of
teaching i.e;
auditory/visual/kinesthetic are used.
As the school has limited number of
trained teachers, minimal teaching
aids, we felt the need to develop the
facility through teacher trainings and
ready to use teaching aids.
5. FEEL: Identified area for
intervention
“What
we felt is that there are
about 200 students from nursery
to 10th grade. Students are keen
learners but have limited resources
to learn. The teachers at Ashray
Akruthi are not trained and not
equipped with various teaching
aids.”
6. “We
felt that as a group belonging to
one of the privileged schools of
Hyderabad, we have the best of
facilities, so why not share our
knowledge and skills for a group with
lesser privileges.”
7. “The
need analysis trip really touched
our hearts where we found that a
teacher with very less resources
struggles hard to teach a
letter/word/sentence for the children
with hearing impairment.”
8. IMAGINE: How to bring a
change???
The 7th and 8th graders divided themselves into 3
groups.
The first group has decided to develop the
school’s library facility through a book collection
drive.
The 2nd group would be responsible for developing
the science lab which has very few displays.
The 3rd group would be developing teaching aids
such as PPTs , flash cards relevant to their
lesson plans and train the teachers to use them
effectively.
11. DO
The
students worked during their CAS
periods to develop the project related
tasks.
The students arranged a paper collection
drive in the school, sold the papers and
collected an amount of 1000Rs which
they sponsored to the organization for
buying equipment for the science lab.

13. An emotional moment
It
was a very emotional moment for all of
us as we could actually do some
difference in the lives of these children.

do can mean everything in
another person's life
